Has anyone noticed a tinny pinking sort of noise at higher revs - sounds like you are driving through gravel which is hitting the mudguards - this is from 4500 - 5000 revs but not apparent on load at lower revs as you would normally get with pinking ?

Great weather at the moment

Yes I have exactly that! Hard to pinpoint exactly where its coming from though. For a while I kept looking down to check my exhaust heat shield was still attached. Now I just live with it and will raise it at the first service.

I thought it may be a loose bracket on the engine but can't see anything also sounds too hard for that - perhaps it's a trait of the engine ?

Mine has also just started to do this albeit at a lower rev range and also after the 1st service, it starts just before the bevel box noise kicks in frown

I have noticed something similar. I also checked the exhaust + shields. I have now decided that the noise comes from the engine area and reflects off the wheel cover. Seems like I am not alone!
We are loving the car - it's also great as a passenger! Now that it has stopped raining, I am looking forward to spending plenty more hours behind the wheel.

Hi
Just happenedi today when driving back from the West End (London), it occurred after the engine was running on 1 cylinder due to a build up of heat in slow traffic

Correct it is only apparent at high revs

In for 1st service soon so hopefully the garage can sort it out

I too have this, comes in about 4500rpm, I thought at first it may have been some loose debris in the exhaust possible weld splatter. But have decided it comes from the engine. By 5250rpm its loud enough to make me back off to prevent engine damage. I will mention this at 1000 mile service as well as rattly cush drive housing and the blue whale under the seat.

I'm hearing a lot of valve action. These are hydraulic tappets and they do have a sound to them. The engine is solidly built and the little explosions go out the pipe to the rear but there is still mechanical stuff going on.

Reminds me of an old knuckle head bike from years gone by.

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

Good to know it's not just mine doing it - probably nothing to worry about but it would be interesting to know the cause.

I have always assumed that as there is no water jacket, and an ali. crankcase, cylinders and heads all sound would be amplified, and if not amplified, certainly not smothered, as it would be in a standard engine with a bonnet over it.

If you think it is pinking, put in some better petrol, Shell V Max or similar, and see if it goes away. Then let us know please.
