Mine does it on any petrol including V-max and the BP equivalent. My guess is that it is ringing of the cooling fins but really don't know for sure.

I do tend to treat it to the best from Esso or Shell so don't think it's the fuel

Same issue for me. Have been wondering what the sound is. Will be an interesting thread

Mine does it too, but only on heavy throttles, so I tend to avoid higher revs. If I use less throttle it is much reduced. I thought it was to do with the throttle cable but it could be pinking I suppose. It's certainly not imaginary, and I only use Shell or similar extra special juice.

Will now feel confident to raise it at dealer... Sort of pleased they all do it, but sort of frustrated too because I know what that means in terms of what the dealer can do...

Could be Pinking - fuel is so very variable in quality - try some "Super" and see if the higher octane helps?

I have not had this problem. confused2

don't think it's a fuel issue to be honest. i've had it every tank of gas i've used and i only fill up with premium and i use a different gas station almost every fillip for the last 3,000 miles

This noise seems to be getting more pronounced, I'm coming to the conclusion its probably pinking, as mentioned by others the noise is louder on a bike engine, with a car it's more of a tinkling sound because of the sound proofing and water jacket - this is like stones being thrown against the mudguards.

I'm using good fuel so assume ignition timing needs looking at

Hi, mine went in for its first service at 1,100 miles and magically came back with pinking on full engine load. I am going to ask if they re-mapped the ignition during the service. No pinking present before the first service.

Plenty of squeaking from the compensator though!

Yes, mine sounds like the throttle cable is getting bombarded by stones if a heavy throttle is used. If it's pinking I've neer heard anything quite like it before...
