Thanks Richard, can I remove the unit with the steering wheel in place? I haven't got a socket that big with me. It's hard to see under the plastic shroud how the unit is mounted. I don't want to start stripping it down and end up with even less not working!

PS: everything works with the hazard switch, pretty sure it is the indicator stalk on right turn that has failed. I'll delve deeper.

I have a box spanner & puller you can borrow to remove the steering wheel.

Made it to Corfu ok, a few bottom scrapes on the ferries and really heavy rain all the way through France last week.
The only problems were electrical, the light switch started buzzing and got hot on the headlight position, I only expected to need my headlights in the tunnels but the weather was so bad through France I needed them on to be seen. More of a problem is that the indicator switch has stopped working on the right turn position. Has anyone had one of these apart? I have visions of 23 year old hardened plastic, springs and contacts flying everywhere.
Does anyone know what parts bin was raided for the steering column stalks and switches back in 1990? I replaced my 1994 +8 one and it was a Triumph 2000 & 2500 model stalk. Got mine from Heart of England. Good luck

Thanks guys.
I've found a new one on the Internet and should be able to get someone to bring it out to Greece next week. Do I have to remove the steering wheel for access? Didn't bring any sockets that big but local workshop may be able to help.

sorry I assumed you were back in the UK.
I found on my 97 +4 I needed a puller to take off the wheel.
Not sure if that is needed though I would think the stalk is in two bits & screws together

I removed my steering wheel without puller - I think the job is possible without removing as it is in two parts. You have to put a step in the new arm as I recall before you fit.

No. You don't (or rather I didn't) need to remove the steering wheel. Is fiddle but doable. You may need a shorter than normal screw driver. If you have two storks (one each side) then the screws from one clamp on to the other stork. If not there is a bracket in place of the second stork that passes around the steering column. Here for a photo where you can see the screw holes an the likely offending connector. If you undo the wiring loom connector (just pull) you could try and "short" the green and white wire with the green or brown connector in the loom side of the connector. With the ignition on the right indicator should work if its the switch. Richard is right some of the arms need a bent. Mine isn't though! Read the watch point at the bottom of the above link. Always use a puller to remove a steering wheel. The splines can be damaged if not. Good luck!

Oh and when you refit the stork make sure the "plastic black fingers" line up with the lobe on the steering column as this lobe cancels the indicators.
