I had my "easy-up" hood replaced by MMC in 2011. When they handed the car back, the instruction for closing was as follows:

1 Apply pressure with the palm of the hand, over each rear catch until they engage. Do not slam shut.
2 Raise hood, locating rail over screen
3 Then engage both front latches into first position.
4 Secure front latches.
5 Secure body and hood rail fasteners.

MMC also suggested that the hood should be left up when the car is parked overnight.

My hood raises and secures with no problems, you just need to ensure that you don't foul the front rail sealing rubber as you position it on the screen.

That's interesting. When I collected mine from the dealer, I was told to release the hood at the rear catches, fit the hood and then carefully close the two rear catches by gentle pressure until they clicked.

I must admit, I can't see any reason why it should be done the way I was told, as opposed to the way you were told.
I think the key point is not to slam shut the rear latches.

Which is how I shut mine and then opening it from the windscreen first. It seems to put less pressure on the components this way.

Slamming things is never done. Unless you're a teenager.

Thanks for the continued help. I think in retrospect slamming it was certainly mistaken on my part, but I have the feeling it was never really adjusted correctly on the one side in the first place. I'll be ordering a new catch from Mr Rutter (at 27 quid with shipping, somewhat preferable to the $190(US) quoted by the dealer over here.....) and trying that, although fitting these wretched things reminds me of the old joke about the definition of a gynaecologist being someone who can wallpaper their landing through the letter-box of their front door.
