1987 4/4. Mileage 142000 (new engine at 85000). Screeching noise (sounds like a pheasant being strangled) from roughly rear left wheel area when left wheel hits a bump. Obviously metal against metal. Given up trying to solve it - done all the usual checks - exhaust (usual culprit), tightness of springs/hangers. Wondering if it might be engine/gear-box mountings. Possibility of cracked chassis? Any help gratefully received!

Check where the propshaft exits the transmission tunnel for contact marks...

thanks Graham - might have to have it up on a ramp. Strange that I've never had the problem before (in 14 years).

You should be able to see from above if you lift out the parcel tray. Good luck!

I've driven around with the whole of the back clear (suspension, axle, etc exposed) with a friend trying to identify the problem but no luck. Was going off to a Morgan garage this morning but they couldn't sort it last time so will probably just go to a local garage and have it up on the ramp. One fear is that it might be a cracked chassis (at 147000 miles) but I gather this is unlikely with a galvanized chassis. Thanks Graham anyway...

Seemed to have sorted it - not coming from where I thought (rear end) but the alternator impellor hitting valance when the LH side of car is lifted when in motion. Slackened off alternator and problem seems to have disappeared. Only problem now is that the alternator belt (725mm) is too slack and I can't get a smaller belt on....

well done for spotting the problem. it is strange the cause of the noise comes from a different direction to where the sound comes.

I guess travels - but I agree. It's been driving me mad for two years and could have sworn that it was from the rear suspension!

Ask Phil Royle about 'sound travelling'... Well found!
