Best fuel consumption I ever had from my T16 was 42 - 43 on a run from home to Curborough. I was running late so kept a constant indicated 75 (3k rpm in 5th) up M5 around M42, then the slow bit along the A446 to the A38. That was one of the quicker drives, driving more gently along country roads the fuel use was higher though it wasn't possible to maintain a constant speed...

Sorry, I gave you the wrong advice. Rovertech=enteengine tuning, ECU etc, type Mark Adams in the search box, four down under maxmeabh. See what you think.

Just realised this thread really applies to Rover engined Plus 4s so my comments really don't apply.

Hi, I am thinking of changing from a CVH 4/4 to a +4?
Are there any good things to look out for regarding the engine? What MPG can one expect? Performance? Good upgrades? I hear 170 bhp is possible with a chip / re-map? Thanks, Will Rover T-16 is very rare in the U.S. and I am not sure of its availability in the UK. I repowered my '61 DHC with a '94 ZETEC engine. Good for 140 HP. Inexpensive and very available. Conversion parts available in the UK.

Hi, On my 1999 +4 with the T16 unit I've had to fit a new high-torque starter motor (because the original was part of a bad batch that just wasn't up to the job). The sump and cam-cover gaskets are prone to leakage, but they're easy enough to replace. The plug leads can deteriorate over time, so it's worth replacing them with the Magnecor ones. And replace the coolant every few years. (The anti-freeze element will be OK, but the corrosion inhibitor becomes less effective with age). The R380 gearbox is prone to baulking when changing up to second gear (it was originally fitted to Land Rover Discoveries, so it was never designed to be a quick-shifter!). Just make sure you use the correct oil in the gearbox - ignore what it says in the owners manual - and go for Land Rover MTF94). The hydraulic tappets can rattle a bit, but if you use flushing oil at every oil change and stick one of the specialist addatives in, that should cure it. Word has it that this unit is robust, if a little 'agricultural', but at least it's British! As far as tuning goes, all I've done is remove the restrictor plate in the exhaust silencer (makes a big difference and saves buying a 'sports' system), and fitted an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (set to 3.5 bar)which seems to have freed things up quite a bit. So overall I'm quite happy with the performance this unit provides, and it's quite torquey so even with two-up and loaded up with luggage it's a pleasure to drive. And now I've shortened the rebound springs it's a lot more comfortable too! I hope this helps - but also check on the Rovertech forums for some further info.

Agree with Sid re the T16 on cam cover leaks, seem to be a 'feature' no problem with the LT77 gearbox on my 93, although the R380 is said to be a better box. Watch out for perishing rubber on fuel lines (from the tank exit) and gearbox remote bushes (this can cause poor shifting just before they fail )and any other ageing rubber. I have had issues with the ECU re tick over when the car is damp and does not fire first go, this is cured by turning off the red kill switch to reset the fuelling, (there are several ECUs though, and may not work on all) mine is an early one without remote.

Gearbox selection on plus 4 T16 car a ping was heard some months ago and now when the car is at low rpm and vibration causes a rattle at the gearbox like a dowl is loose due to a broken spring the ping sound..
The car especially when hot is more difficult to select gears Im hoping its a simple job with the selector...but you mention bushes too..
is it an easy job to fix?
