This relates to a recent post I put up. The alternator impellor runs very close (too close) to the valance and when the belt is properly tensioned (725mm belt) the impellor hits the valance when going over a bump (speed bumps particularly). Dreadful noise. Problem solved by slackening off the belt but that shouldn't have to be the solution. Tried to fit a shorter (715mm) belt but it won't go on. Any ideas dear friends?

. Its a *%>?@)+^7 of a job getting the alternator on and off you may just need a washer or two and a longer nut and bolt to give it a fraction of an inch more . Get help and a swear box , it took me hours and my wife helping me. Mines a 1986 4/4 .

I've run different length belts on a 1972 4/4, but I did so as the crank pulley was a bit smaller and the much modified engine reved higher, limiter set to 6800, but probably safe to 7500.

I'm surprised if the 725 is too slack/long, a 715 won't go on as it's only 10 mm shorter (number is the length). With mine, to get the shorter belt on, one had to swing the adjuster right out of the way by removing the bolt that secures it to the alternator. That way the belt would easily go on, but if you left all the bolts in place, no way would it have gone one.

Pretty sure I've also fitted a tight belt by using a screw driver a bit like a bicycle derailleur but I do have my bush mechanic moments.

Not sure if this helps, but the reference details on the alternator drive belt that Mike Duncan supplied as a spare relate to a Fiat 600. I know from experience that the Ford belt is too long.

If there's room to swing a ball pein, find something to hit against for the other side of the panel and "create some space".
A heavy piece of wood with a recess would do the job.
