My house has been without gas for three days now.(yes, my gas payment is up to date ) Actually the whole street is without gas, and the gas people have found the pipe was blocked by masses amount of water, but still could not locate the leak Last night, they handed out a little 2kw fan heater and a little electric cooking plate to each household, it was almost laughable. I have to take the whole family out for our dinner and go to my parents house, so that we could all have a shower, then have to come back to a freezing house I am tempted to move my family to live in a hotel and claim the expenses, can I do that?

I'd give it a go!
It probably depends on:
- how long you have been without adequate heating, hot water, cooking facilities etc - how big your family is, and whether their heater and cooking plate is deemed enough for that size of family - whether their work (or lack of it) is having a detrimental effect on your lives (business, school exams etc) - whether you want the local B&B or 5* - how good your lawyer is
You must be furious after their £0.5bn "profit" announcement earlier today.

Exactly the reason why I wanted a share of their profit

Kin, it is amazing how we take our utilities for granted and how badly we miss them when they are out-of-service I think Steve is right, there is a slim chance you'll see any compensation. I know where BT lost the lines to our business - which is dependent on use of the phone to make money! - the compensation we were offered for 4-5 days of non-service was criminal (iirc something stupid like £10.00 per day!) Fight the power Kin!

Kin,I would give it a go. I had similar problems with BT to Simon. I did a bit better though with just under £1000. After days of getting no where I finally found one of the directors email addresses. Which seemed to get almost instant results. Must admit that these types of things do get to me, so when a large IT suppliers was mucking me about a few years ago did a quick search on companies house found one of the directors birthday the following week and sent him a book on customer service skills. I felt much better.

Thanks for the advice guys, but my dream of living in the Hilton hotel and wine & dine at the British Gas expense is over, as they have just managed to repair the problem and now I have full supply...
Simon, I understand what you're saying, but I never take anything for granted. I constantly remind myself how lucky I am when compared to the third world countries...

I wasn't trying to be all deep and 'poor us' , I was just saying how it's a real pain when things we take for granted are 'turned off' (I have a hose pipe, bucket and sponge if you need a wash! - only £5.00 )

Yes I know you weren't trying to be deep, guess what I was trying to say was, even without gas; I am still luckier than all those people living in the third world, although not as lucky as the rest of Britain Simon, I can't afford to pay you £5 for a wash, I'd rather stand out in the rain..
