I spent my college days in the US in the late 60's and a friend had a vette that was great in a straight line but useless round the rural roads of Maryland and Virginia..... my bug eye sprite could lead the way around the corners for all of 1 or 2 seconds.....

but they were pretty cars

A Swedish Chief Engineer (or rather his Japanese wife) resident in Ca. tried to sell me their 'Vette one voyage. The price was really good compared to UK, but by the time I'd shipped it home, paid taxes etc. the difference wasn't that great.

Newer Corvettes with fully independent suspension are much better off 'round corners than their older counterparts. I dare say they'd do the job better than many European sports cars because of their extremely low center-of-gravity and tuned suspension... However, what they've earned in handling they've lost in smooth driving characteristics. Even newer ones can provide a bit of a harsh ride (I've only been in an '01 at the latest on the road, but have read enough on them to suggest that what I've mentioned rings true).

Never ridden in any.
It was a mid '70s car they were trying to sell me, some 10+ years old. Had apparently been fuly rebuilt... Looked really good in the photos.
In Garden Grove area I seem to recall...

when a student in the US the cars for those with $ were Vettes , Pontiac GTO's , camaros. For those with less $ VW Beetles, rebuilt MG's and Healy's usually work in progress, elderly mustangs, and the odd elderly caddilac, most of my friends fell into the latter category apart from a couple of guys who returned from uncle sam's free tour of south east asia without a scratch - one had a new vette and the other an MGTF

Did like the design of the vettes great freeway cruisers but.... build quality made British Leyland look good

That's saying something!
I was more into Trans-Am / Firebird, but again, apart from riding in one, never owned one.
Nearest I got to Americana was a Dodge W200, crew cab, stepside pickup, ex USAF as far as I know. Made LRs look and feel very small!

firebirds in the late 60's by the crowd I ran with were considered 2nd best to the camaro and the Pontiac GTO was better than the camaro, me it was quite a mental adjustment getting used to the engine sizes smile what did surprise me was how many liked healy's and the mga had a great following as indeed did the older MG's . heaaly 100/4 and 100/6 were popular but expensive....
