I really want to have a go at the 'Thrill on the Hill' on 28th September but have never done anything like this before and although I think I'm a good driver I'm
Probably only really average. I have a 2013 bog standard 4/4 which i love and dont want to damage. Any views? Should I go for it? Am I chewing off too much? Should I go as a spectator in the first instance? Are there any insurance implications?

I used to be indecisive, now I'm
not so sure.

I will really appreciate advice and informed opinion.

The beauty of a Hill Climb is that you can go at your own pace and there are no other cars on the hill during your run; therefore it is as safe as any motorsport can be.
There will be some people who will be going for fast times, but also a lot who will just enjoy a "spirited" run up the hill.

Insurance? Probably worth advising your provider. Many of the Morgan Specialists will cover you (if you are with one of them), though there may be a small charge.

Also, I am sure a TMer will let you be their passenger, so you can judge what the hill is like, prior to your own run.

As Budster said you don't have to drive fast, it's just good fun. I've only been once before and I'm doing it in my 3 wheeler this time and there's no shame in coming last

I`ve booked my place and am in the same boat - not going to push(too much) just enjoy the experience.

Since we are coming from so far away I'm just going to have to content myself with watching you guys. Besides I have "automatic speed control" in the passenger seat.

I'm quite looking forward to meeting some other TMers.

So then Simon I presume you and Stanley are partaking in a spirited run up the hill, trust you will have your Biggles hat on and goggles.

I missed the first post so my warning is a bit late. Hillclimbs like shelsley are not the easiest form of the sport - ok there are no other cars on track but the track is narrow and you need to be very good at car control to catch a slide before hitting the bank on one side or the drop on the other

I would be amazed if your insurance covered you as normal. My insurance covers me for hitting someone else on a track day but not for damage to my own car. And track days arent even ''competition'' unlike hill climbs

Andy, you are very welcome to come up with me as a passenger before you try a run up. If I'm not running my 4/4 I'll be taking it fairly gently! I've been up a few times and as Howard says, it's quite a deceptive hill...no run offs if you lose it and some hard banks to hit. However, its not a competition and I'd suggests giving the car a lot of welly and noisy wheelspin at the start....to impress everyone, then take it at a pace that you feel happy to. You can give it plenty of welly after the last bend on the run up to the finish line.

As far as insurance is concerned, it depends on your insurer. I do mine through Headley and they cover me for no additional premium if it is an untimed run and there is no competition element. I just need to advise them of each event.

I still think we need a plan to meet. In a sea of old blokes, we all look alike, except Graham, who gets involved and always has high vis on...................
