So then Simon I presume you and Stanley are partaking in a spirited run up the hill, trust you will have your Biggles hat on and goggles. No plans for a hill run. Stanley has to be treated with care and compasssion. As for "Biggles hat and goggles" I was thinking more like a flying jacket and flat cap, but who knows? Bud

No Hi-vis for this one Dave. But I expect I'll be wearing the hat. We seem to have gone motorsport here - this is not a motorsport event - runs are untimed. Take it at your own pace. Use the first run(s) to learn the hill, driving progressively quicker with each run. STAY within your own limits. You'd be surprised how many, when they get on a track, drive far slower than when out on the road, because "it is dangerous". Not so, if you stay within your own limits and a darn sight safer than driving on the road because you're the only one out there, with safety marshals at all or most posts, and medical team somewhere close to hand... Just enjoy

Staying within your limits is a nice concept if you know what those limits are. But most of us only ever get an idea of the limits by exceeding them, and this is much better done on a circuit with run offs than shelsley without.
When the post was titled hill climb I did assume it would be timed and competitive. Apparently it is not, but it will still be difficult ( well it would for me!) not to have a go. As with track days that are also not timed and also non competitive . Sure!

Very good advice from Graham:)) I hillclimbed for 3 seasons 20+ years ago.Had to give up because gave me an ultimatum " its the car or me" - a v tough choice and one that took a long time to decide! My advice....if u are going to drive the hill ...and BTW I am...walk the course carefully ...try to decided your braking/turning points and try to stick to them!Look at them from the drivers position ie not stood up! ok u may look a D**K but its the best way -simply crouch down. If you get out of your comfort zone give yourself time to back off - its not worth going for the Hero moments - I know my mate died this way:((( Try to keep calm and above all drive as smoothly as you can - and remember its just u and u are there to enjoy - not break the track record!IF you take a passenger then do not do anything to risk them.Hope this helps - and hope to meet many TMs there. ps ...maybe when I get on the line ...

There will be a Taffmog presence. I don't think we will be doing runs though. The temptation could be too much I know one Taffmogger has "lip-curling" moments when the red mist takes over........ A spirited run is ok and fun but I won't be doing one. I don't know Shelsley anyway, but enjoyed runs up Prescott in the past, trying to work out the lines/braking points without getting too near the edge, and make them smooth runs. That's my advice to anyone, try to make the runs smooth on the good lines but leave good margins for error.

Luckily it's not timed......so just aim to get an impressive tyre smoking start off the line to impress the crowds and then everyone thinks you are fast!

From having driven Shelsley Walsh competitivly the bend to watch out for is the last real one, and is not always inspected properly by drivers as it is almost the top of a steep climb.
The final bend in the 'S' is narrow, well cambered, and overhung by trees. If you go a bit wide of the correct line on most other bends, usually no real harm done and you can correct and carry on. The outside of the 'S' gets gravel, mud and moss, and... stays wet long after the rest of the course has dried out. Go wide there, and you'll have an accident.
Non-competitive driving, as fast as you'd go on the road with the proviso you know no-one is coming the other way. Unless you are an idiot...
As for insurance, never had competition insurance over perhaps 20 years of driving. Cost me about £300 in bits over the years for minor accidents, but I do most repairs myself.
