Sorry but you really do have it backwards. In general terms oiled filters give higher air flow but stop less dust. After a while, when they get dirty, they give less airflow. OEM filters give less airflow initially, filter more dust, and last longer.
Special cases such as off road vehicles and race vehicles are a different issue because of their particular requirements and the fact that they get more attention.
This is not just my opinion but also that of many impartial experts.
At this point I close as I think I have said enough on the subject and there is no point in saying more.

I guess that's why oiled foam filters are preferable in dusty environments: They stop less dust

Oh dear I really must stop responding to this thread. Oiled foam filters are used where high flow is required and taking into consideration the acceptable COMPROMISE of the subsequent high maintenance in some cases not excluding re-building engines. I state once again that when and oiled filter is used instead of an OEM filter (that is to say with the standard intake) the gains are largely minor and of relatively short duration (as soon as they get dirty they loose the 'high flow' characteristic). The potential downside is makes it not worth the effort. There are non-oiled high flow filters that show better long term performance as an alternative to oiled filters)
When even moderate performance modifications, such as fitting throttle bodies, require the fitting of oiled foam filters one should be aware of the requirements of regular maintenance and accept that the high flow generally also means less efficient filtering. Also the oil catches the dust, as it should, but then the accumulated dust and oil starts to block the filter.
Here I really do stop. Perhaps one day we can continue the discussion over a glass or two of wine.

Let me repeat that in dusty conditions, an oiled foam filter is better than a dry paper filter. Even the aeroplane industry agrees - you know, the one where everything has to be tested and retested, and documented. Here's the Pilatus Porter PC-6: http://www.pilatus-aircraft.com/#2Their "desert kit" consists of a box with oiled foam filters rather than the ordinary, smaller filters they use. They don't do this to add more air to the aircraft's turbine intake, but to stop ingress of sand and dust.

I have better things to do with my time. If this offends the Mods or anyone else on this site, I'm happy to withdraw from the site as of now You might, perhaps to take my views on board? Oh, G so now not only is it abuse to point you to a link to an aeroplane which has a desert kit consisting of oiled foam filters, but It's also ranting. The irony is, of course, you're the one ranting about abuse and free expression, but trying to take that away from me at the same time.
And as for calling people tossers. Yes, I called the Gomog idiot a tosser for threatening legal action because someone on here stated their opinion of his car. I think that was well-deserved.
Do try to keep threads separate.
Good show of colours, G.
Edit: What's with the childish "I can't take it. If you don't stop countering me, I will leave"? Seriously? And now that you dragged the other thread into this: You were the one posting a joint press release with that Gomog bloke for all to see.

Yes, deary me. If you get nowhere by crying "abuse" when I posted a link to a plane which uses oiled foam filters for their desert kit, instead of responding to the validity of having an aeroplane with oiled foam filters, let's just ignore the other valid points and pretend you made a relevant point. But please do tell me where the abuse is in this post: Let me repeat that in dusty conditions, an oiled foam filter is better than a dry paper filter. Looks like the GoMog Plus 8 is included in the Brightwells Classic Vehicle Auction on the 25th September 2013 with an estimate of GBP30-32,000.00. I think that this photo pretty much confirms this it is the GoMog car. I must say that if it goes for anything around the estimate it seems a very fair price to me .................. I wonder if the number goes with it? I guess so as it is shown on the photos. Brian
