I would go along with Easter on this, it is not in a "wet" area, it was running OK when the damage was noticed so the cam belt was still in place with no valve or drive train damage. It looks like the nut has undone and damaged the case. Torque it up and lock it, check the drive belt condition, temp repair the cover and use it until the replacement cover arrives. Fairly certain it's not as bad as it looks, not an engine change but a competant S&S engineer will know. I assume a trained Morgan dealer will know for sure?

According to the ad from J P Cycles, the S&S motor has a 3year warranty. I'd go along with the new engine camp, surely S&S should have it back to determine what went wrong. Gerry.

Very simple. Either a lock washer was left off in assembly or the nut was not torqued down.
Guzzi had a similar experience with the first few hundred Grisso 4 valve engines a few years back. Seems the wrong type of washer was fitted in production.

I'm not really familiar with Motorcycle engines, or the S&S in particular...but are they "interference" engines? i.e. when the timing belt fails do the valves and pistons collide in catastrophe? No, the X-Wedges are not "interference" engines. Luckily!

Surely it is still under warranty and if you do not get a new engine, and therefore a speedier repair, you will never trust it again.

I wouldn't run it till fixed. The belt must surely be damaged or will be damaged if run by the small bits of metal, ditto the oil seals behind the toothed gears.

Does the dealer have a demonstrator M3w? If so, they should lend it to you until fixed.

Found it: All cams for S&S X-Wedge engines feature the S&S Easy Start automatic, mechanical
compression release. The ease of starting with the Easy Start cams, coupled with
the fact that compression ratio does not increase proportionally with displacement
in X-Wedge engines, allows cams to be used with a wide range of displacements.
Production cams for X-Wedge are designed to be “non-interference” cams. That
means that if the valve train were to stop for any reason, there is enough valve to
valve, and valve to piston clearance to avoid engine damage from valves contacting
