Some taper bearing applications (differential pinion bearings, for example)use a collapsible or crushable sleeve between the bearing cones. These bearings are torqued up to a yield value that causes the sleeve to compress and pre-load the bearings. This set-up is used on power transfer applications, but not at all necessary on light duty applications like front wheels on a Mog.

Your car has had a replacement "later" stub axle fitted at some point
in circa 1991 the factory moved the hub out by 1/8"- on the early production of this modification they simply fitted a spacer to the early stub axles
with the later production they actually modified the forging/machining detail
