Thanks

On my T16 ECU failure which took a while to work out. Head gaskets can be an issue but so far so good for me.

The exhaust manifold can help perish the air intake hose & melt the wash bottle. Mine did both.

Any other issues with the T16? Also Gearbox differences, do you know when they changed it?

Perry, One can only speak as one finds. On the M16 the air intake is on the induction side so will not be affected by heat. The water bottle is well away from the exhaust. The M16 can weep from the corner of the gasket but is a straight forward fix. I don't know if one is better than the other - they can both be tuned to give great rewards. MPG is the same I guess Mine will return 34 around town (an uprated version) and forty plus driving to Britain and back. See if you can try both. John and I obviously like them. Good luck.

Try Gomog. They have a secton on the gearboxes.

Hi,
On my 1999 +4 with the T16 unit I've had to fit a new high-torque starter motor (because the original was part of a bad batch that just wasn't up to the job).
The sump and cam-cover gaskets are prone to leakage, but they're easy enough to replace.
The plug leads can deteriorate over time, so it's worth replacing them with the Magnecor ones.
And replace the coolant every few years. (The anti-freeze element will be OK, but the corrosion inhibitor becomes less effective with age).
The R380 gearbox is prone to baulking when changing up to second gear (it was originally fitted to Land Rover Discoveries, so it was never designed to be a quick-shifter!.
Just make sure you use the correct oil in it- ignore what it says in the owners manual - and go for Land Rover MTF94).
The hydraulic tappets can rattle a bit, but if you use flushing oil at every oil change and stick one of the specialist addatives in, that should cure it.
Word has it that this unit is robust, if a little 'agricultural', but at least it's British!
I hope this helps - but also check on the Rovertech forums for some further info.
