I noticed in photos that the 2013 M3W gear stick (shift lever) was moved about 10-12" in front of the original location. The 2012 seems as though it would have been easier to reach. Does anyone know why it was relocated?

Well that certainly blows. Everyone knows that a M3W owner will have at least one arm shorter from hanging off the side and dragging down the pavement. They shouldn't make this harder to reach.

Glad I got the earlier model where the shift lever falls right in your hand.

The new arrangement makes it easier to shift when you have a passenger on board so you don't end up elbowing them constantly.

I've driven both set ups and without a passenger they have little difference after a few miles

Thanks for the explanation. I never would have guessed that this was the reason, but definitely makes sense.

I can see how the 2013 arrangement would force you to extend your arm a bit more to reach the shifter and avoid elbowing your passenger.

Have heard the newer location allows for a shorter throw gearchange although didn't notice this when I drove a recent car with the forward gearlever position. My car has original position.

On the RHD car with the new positioning that I was in the gearlever tended to knock the released handbrake, just enough to be slightly annoying. This might be a one off and someone else I spoke to with the arrangement didn't find it a problem.

There are arguments for both arrangements although it's also definitely true that it's earier to change gear with the later arrangement if you have a largish passenger. But for solo driving I prefer the original.

The "New" forward position makes gear changes easier/shorter IMO and stops the drivers elbow touching the passenger when 2 up. ranting

Have driven both types and prefer the Forward position. laugh2

Me I don't give a damn where it is to be honest!

Nothing wrong with touching some of the passengers I am sure.

Perhaps it depends on the gender of the passenger, if you are not too old to remember!
