Looking at the wonderful Aero Leather site I am also tempted by the Barnstormer. They do a shawl collar version as well. Nice jackets.

It is a nice jacket but I am not all that sure it suits the Morgan. There is also a problem with the Irwin type flying jackets. In the Morgan we are sitting so that our legs are stretched out in front of us and bent at the waist in such a way that any bulky jacket is bunched up in front of us. What is needed is a jacket that is long enough to cover the kidney area when seated but has a zip or fasteners at the front that can allow the front opening to divide from the waist down to stop the front bunching up. Any belt, if fitted, needs to be at the waist, above the hips.

Personally I am not so concerned about the jacket being waterproof. The interior of the car is not waterproof so I put the hood up if it starts to rain

You've sold me on that very elegant Monza jacket again. That probably is the best all rounder. I will just have to get one of each.

Pot belly syndrome?

I do like the Barnstormer.....but like Peter I am concerned about it bunching up in the car...plus being heavy duty horsehide it may not be that flexible. I originally tried an Irving flying jacket and found it too bulky, especially for getting out of the car with hood up....ok I know the hood shouldn't be up! I ended up with one of Holdens flying jackets which is less bulky. For less chilly days I've got a Holden's leather motoring jacket....the last of their stock a few years ago, found in their storeroom with an old price label on it. They very kindly sold it to me for £150...nearly half price! A shame they stopped making them; made by the same lady in Bromyard who makes the Flying Jackets and in thick but supple leather and just the right length for driving in.

Jay, the lightweight Irvin flying jacket that I have is not bad. It normally comes without a belt an I ordered the belt (an extra £30!!) that is fitted to the heavier Irvin. Now I wish I had not ordered the belt. I would prefer a zip that could be raised from the bottom or started a little higher up, say about 3", leaving the bottom front of the jacket free to open when seated.

If I was going to order a new jacket I would probably go for the lambskin but perhaps made generally in the flying jacket style but with a belt at the waist instead of at the bottom. To me the Barnstormer seems to have the belt in the right place.

Like DaveW I also use the black Centenery quilted Morgan jacket for winter motoring. Its very warm and although looks bulky it isnt when worn in the car and it has a good collar when combined with a trapper hat keeps you nice and cosy on a cold day. Modern technical fabrics are very good for cold wet weather, they are light and very durable and come in a range of colours. I dont think you see mountain climbers using tweed or leather these days
