Whilst doing some routine maintenance on my plus, I was very surprised to see cheap and nasty exhaust clamps MMC have used. For £5.60 (retail and including postage) I have replaced them with a quality fitting. When removing the MMC clamps I was also surprised to find the threads stripped on both sides.

I disagree there Deano, the cheap clamp as you describe it has been used very successfully in the Exhaust fitting world for decades was easy to remove when you had to change a section of pipe. Your more expensive counterpart may prove more difficult to remove once it gets a bit rusty and cold welds itself to the pipe.

Well after 3000 mainly dry miles, I can assure you the MMC version where not easy to get off. If the new ones do rust and prove difficult the undo, then you just cut the one bolt and replace it!

As you said the old clamps were difficult to remove I expect the threads stripped as you were 'unfreezing' them... Finding a similar type clamp in stainless steel seems difficult (for a sensible price) in UK and some have imported them from across the pond.

A disadvantage of the "U"bolt style is that the loop(U) part can put a crease in the pipes (outer and inner) so that even when the clamp is removed you still cannot pull one section out of the other. This is because they have been over-tightened to compensate for a poor fit at the joint or just too much enthusiasm.
