I need a high level brake light to fit over my luggage on a two seat 4/4 and have seen the advert for the Simmonds kit. Does anyone have any experience of it? In particular I'm interested in how and where the socket is fitted and wether it's a hard task (as mechanically I'm a novice!) I have a 2013 4/4 with factory luggage rack and a MMC leather suitcase and 'H' straps.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Andy

Do you have a spare wheel? Cars with spare wheel have a socket and a plug for the cobra with can be unplugged easily. The Simmonds set has different a cigar lighter plug and a cigar lighter socket according to their shop. So you would have to connect the cobra cable to the socket. If it is my car I would buy me the original plug from the cobra and solder it to the Simmonds light. At least your local Morgan dealer should have the plug.

At a show recently I saw a plus 8 with a high level warning light made from a classic stainless brake light mounted on a stainless tube above the the spare wheel. And fixed on a bracket in a similar way to the modern one. More aesthetically pleasing, I am going to look into this and will advise.

Before Simmonds marketed their High Level Lamp I made my own

I got the Morgan's wiring harness maker (address below) to make me a 'Y' splitter so that I could just plug it into the line to the Cobra joint where there is a joint and leave it there permanently.

They made the one below for me and also supplied the extra socket for my Suitcase Brake Light cable. They told me it si important to get the brake lamp cables in the correct order re live and neutral to fit their splitter, which I did and it works perfectly.

If you source the sockets and are good a wiring you could make your own 'Y' piece

I would recommend to anyone else going this route to get the spare leg of the Y made much longer so that it may be lifted out of the spare wheel well when needed. This makes attaching the socket much easier. When its not being used this spare socket sits on the wooden cross member alongside the spare wheel attached to a strip of Velcro. I wrapped the other velcro around the cable.

The Socket types.

I hope that this helps.
Frank

I am adding a wind stop and will fit an LED onto it.
I am hoping with the hood up it will still be visible through the window

My solution

http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/117220/

I do like the Y cable Frank 4x4 had made, and yes I agree one leg suold be long enough to clear the spare wheel.
