I like the Indian, too. 119 ft./lbs. of torque @ 3k rpms. But make no mistake...the Wing (Goldwing) is still King.

My observation is that the fellow that had two pair of clamps (which I purchased two pair just in case) did so in order for his length to work out on where the hair-pin goes through the +/- 3/8" rod of the rack securing the front end.
Once you hold the clamps in your hands, you'll know they are well made. Each half of the clamp is such a good fit on the roll-bar, that with the clamping bolt loose, it's still difficult to slide them up or down the roll-bar. The clamp is designed in such a way that the bolt adds linear clamping force but to spread the halves, the bolt goes into shear which would be a considerable amount. To be a simple item, you can tell some thought when in to them.
Where the clamp mounts, its not vertical to planet earth so it is slightly cocked when mounted. That is the reason for opening up the hole to 1/2" as the pegs on the rack are geared for a vertical slip fit. I took the "top-hat" plastic bushing that came with the rack and shortened them to the thickness of the clamp. When I install the rack, I slip a short piece of rubber hose to take up the length difference. I trimmed them to where the rubber has to be slightly compressed to install the hair-pin. This keeps the rack, as well as, the hair-pin from adding to the other usual rattles of the car.
I just installed the rack a few days ago and have not had a chance to use it with a load but have no doubts or I'd still be working on it. Being a motorcycle guy, I am used to strapping things down and what to expect out of a rack. I've lived out of tour-packs on motorcycles over the years so don't see much difference here including the water-proofing aspect.
Yes, a hinged model would be handy but I don't get much service often out of the boot anyway. If I have a rear flat, removing the rack is the least of my worries. That and I already have more projects than I should.
I suspect on my trips, a fair amount of my "stuff" will be in the passenger side. I'm not taking any women on a trip in this car and more than likely, the reason for the trip will be to get away from a woman.
