Today I managed a bit more. The undertray.............
This is to stop dirt getting up onto the front of the engne. The only downside is that it makes it harder to get a jack on the cross tube, but with my lifting beam it's OK.

So first the template, which drew my attention to the offset.... laid on a sheet of 2mm aluminium.



First cut:


After a few test fits and after shaving the edges, now drilled and curved over the jack handle with a Thor hammer.

The finish is a problem. Although one side is protected with a plastic film, it doesn't stay mint, and the other side is usually far from mint. So I just run the wire brush in the drill over it and cover it in swirls, which looks better than random scratches and lines.
It is shaped so that it slots in over the bottom chassis rails, which means a slight compromise on width. I could also be fitted under the chassis rails but doesn't look quite as tidy this way.
It's secured by using the towing eye bolts on the offside, and a single nut & bolt using the same holes on the nearside. At the rear I use a nut & bolt each side, penny washers top & bottom, and a cut penny washer to take up the gap. The penny washers then pinch the chassis flange and it doesn't need drilling.

Envious that the sump on Mr B isn't lower than the chassis rail. I had a "Roadster Moment" today, slow speed and no damage but horrible noise...

You'd think if it's possible on the 4 cylinder to get decent clearance it would be possible on the V6........
The difference is quite significant.

If you ground it, double check because the cast alloy sump is very thin, and can get hairline cracks.

Another very nice job Dave. I also made one recently out of 2mm ali. It sits a bit more forward than yours. I was also hoping to keep the engine bay a little cleaner. It’s been on a few months now and I am pleased with the results.

A lower cowl is on my list Roger, similar to your photo, and fitted between the over-rider irons. I've rolled the raw material over the jack handle, but that's all I've done so far!

Rolled mine around a piece of old scaffold pole. Wish I had made it a couple of inches longer. Having seen yours I want to fill it all in now! My MK1 didn’t have the opening in the front but I couldn’t resist playing around so made another. It still appears to function ok because the underside of the bonnet seem to be collecting less grime. I did take it off for the MOT to allow full inspection though.
