One of the factory issues with the OEM regulator was a bad ground when it was mounted to the chassis. Once the bad connection became loose it would cause increased load and overheat the unit causing it to fail.
Check your ground wire for a good clean connection to the chassis. Pull the bolt and remove any paint, rust or debris. Then apply a small dab of dielectric grease and bolt it up tight.
With the location of the regulator, the ground connection it prone to get wet and dirty causing oxidation and poor connection.
2 of the 3 rubber isolators on my car broke within the first few hundred miles. I removed them and hard mounted the regulator directly.
While I had the regulator off I took the face of it to my belt sander and sanded the paint off of all of the fins. It now matches the cylinder heads and looks quite neat in my opinion. It also allows direct contact between the cooling fins and air so it should also cool more efficiently.
1000 miles so far with this set up and no issues

It's a cast aluminum housing so no rust issues. Aluminum sheds heat more efficiently that steel
