So I've gotten my permanent license plates and I'm wondering how most of you are affixing the plate to the car? are you drilling holes in the mounting plate? I'm thinking that using automotive grade double sided foam tape is the way to go...

Input appreciated.

I tried that but found that when it got hot the plates started to lift off. Stainless screws, washers on the back, and nylocks are much better.

The front plate of a Plus 4 (suppose all trads) is to be placed on a curved surface, so either the plates themselves are shaped to fit that surface (if they're made of metal it'll be easy) or the tape will probably not do the job for a long period of time.

As for the M3W, I don't think the front plate is needed in Portugal (not sure about other countries but won't derail another thread by asking wink ). The small rear plate will probably do with anything, from tape to stainless screws. I think (but not sure), tape is not exactly "legal" in Portugal, but I never saw traffic police here looking at it or causing anyone trouble because of it.

As Mario said, tape and heat mean tht tape won't hold the plastic UK front plate, so two screws needed. But at the back tape seems fine.

The UK has no rules about fixing plates, other than they must be "secure".

I bought a metal black and chrome "novelty" plate for the front...no holes drilled...

Going to try the 3M automotive trim tape and see if it holds.

The backing plate will vibrate lose at some point, so:
Remove backing Plate
Temporarily fit number plate with Masking tape
Mark pilot holes on back of number plate using backing plate fixing holes as a guide
Drill out these holes to slightly larger than supplied fixing machine screws
Choose a couple of good spots on the number plate and drill two M6 clearance holes through number and backing.
Countersink these holes using countersink tool or the biggest drill in your toolkit
Fix number plate to backing plate using M6 c/s socket headed machine screws and nylock nuts.
You can now fix and remove the backing and number plate without having to prise off the double sided nastiness.

Don't forget to thread lock the backing plate screws

Take it off and put in the trash box.

I've taken mine off and not had any issues from cop yet.
