i have an oil pump leak due to a failed seal on my 1.6 cvh 4/4. i've studied it for a while and access looks a bit tricky without a lift to get access underneath the car. i'm weighing up whether to bite the bullet and pay for it to be done in the garage.
but before i throw in the towel as i would much rather have the satisfaction of working on it myself can anyone give me any advice how i might go about it, do i need to remove the radiator for example?
many thanks

If the seal is your sump gasket then the engine will have to be removed . The sump can not be removed by just those bolts that hold it onto the block . You will need the rad out and their is an engine eye at the rear just above the heater pipes ( could have your leads in it ) . MAY ? be another just above the inlet exhaust at the very front . If not you can buy one on the net or go to a scrap yard . Have a look at some photos first and ask others . thanks for the reply. the leak is from the oil pump that bolts onto the front of the engine and a failed seal on that, i'm pretty sure its not the sump. certainly when i've had the engine running the oil is coming from that pump.

Should be doable at home and I doubt it's linked to the sump.

Just going off what was done to mine in the mid 90s the oil pressure dropped to very low ( unable to remember what ) part of the pump had broken ( looked from memory like a sprocket with broken teeth ) . May be why the engine and sump came out . thanks for the reply. the leak is from the oil pump that bolts onto the front of the engine and a failed seal on that, i'm pretty sure its not the sump. certainly when i've had the engine running the oil is coming from that pump.

I have the Haynes manual that covers CVH engines - bought when I had a 92. 4/4. It details how to change/dismantle a d rebuild oil pump. Haynes show it done with engine out so I don't know how easy it is in a Morgan withe the engine in situ. A couple of points include........ Remove timing belt/ sprockets/sump. If just replacing the gasket then refurb of pump itself may not be needed but a new oil seal for the pump housing is recommended. Pump should be primed before refit. Refitting the sump involves using sealing compound at both ends - pump end and rear. The procedure is obviously for the Escort/Orion's the engine was mainly used in so an in-line set up may lead to differences in access etc for a Morgan. I can't remember enough about it as I didn't need to do any such work. Vaguely, it is possible it will be straight forward with a car high up enough off ground for access, BUT.... Morgans have in line gearbox (Ford type 9 usually) so there MAY be bell housing set up differences to deal with. Best bet is to see if someone here has replaced a sump on a CVH to see if any complications were found. At face value it should be do-able at home with good axle stands though. If you want the Haynes manual then PM me. You have first refusal if anyone else wants it. sospan

thanks for the comments. i'm pretty sure its not the sump but the seal in the oil pump or if there is a gasket on the pump onto the engine.
just a shame i cant get the car up on a lift and have a look at doing the job properly.
sospan thanks for the offer, i have sent you a pm.
