Dear Morganites,
I am sorry if this topic might have been covered before, but I would very much like to know if the ideal outdoor car cover for a new plus 8 exists? It should have stretch for easy fastening, be water (and snow) proof, able to be collapsible into a bag suitable for daily use and not too expensive. I can´t be the only one who intends to drive to work even when there is a risk of rain, snow, hail or gale during the day. What do You fellows use? I know all Morganites have stiff upper lips but it is impractical to let the lip cover the car during work and I am not allowed to bring the Mog into the ambulance hall, sadly.

Hi Rh08, I have a quite expensive heavyweight multi layer cover, it has a soft inner lining and is ok for long term protection. However, when folded up it is huge and not ideal for transporting, getting it back in its bag is an acquired art and not something you would want to do every day.
A lightweight Nylon cover would probably be better for daily use, problem is you cant put covers on a wet or dirty car, perhaps a cockpit or storm cover (I have both) to protect the hood or tonneau cover before rain or snow? You can tumble dry nylon types usually, but not multi layered ones.

If you are using the car for work it may be difficult to get the car dry enough to put a cover on in winter, certainly here in Britain. Plus covers need daily removing to get rid of condensation whatever type you use. (I have never understood the claim for fabrics to be both breathable and waterproof)

I have a Moggie Mac - just a cockpit cover which I use for general parking up and when on holiday - fits under the seat when folded also does not scratch the car if put on a dirty mog.
Lots available - mine is from Walker St Claire - advertise in Miscellany - about £60 inc.p&P - but John Taylor does one as well. I also have a full cover & one that covers cockpit & bonnet - but rarely u8se t6he latter as it can scuff the paintwork on thew bonnet with the elastics if it gets windy.

I have a Specialised Covers outdoor Cover for my Golf.

http://www.specialisedcovers.com/car-covers.html

It's a practical option because it's not in regular use, and keeps the Golf dry and being red, hopefully will help to reduce fade.

The disadvantages though:

It folds down into a very large rucksack size, with a girth too wide to allow both hands to touch when reached around. So no use whatsoever away from home.
It can only be used on a clean dry car, although the manufacturer does say that it will breathe if condensation occurs between car & cover. So after a run out, I have to thoroughly clean and dry the whole car before I can refit it. Note that being of a concours disposition, this is not a chore.

Should you have to remove it wet, it takes a lot of effort to fold the cover so that the wet outside doesn't contact the dry inside.

The benefits:
A perfect fit.
Elastocated ends.
Four under-car straps with adjustable ends - these can be a chore to attach at the second end, but hold the cover reallt securely.

I suggest you consider a storm cover, The thin nylon type covers from the screen base to the lower edge of the hood, and protects the hood from rain. It folds into a small bag which is roughly the size of a folded lightweight Kagool.
The larger storm cover, made of thicker material covers from the cowl to beyond the rear of the hood, but could not be used on a dirty car.
Storm Cover: (The roof is down in this photo - no water gets through).

Big Storm Cover:

I don't know how well a 'normal UK winter' compares with a 'normal' winter in Sweden!

This is the normal travelers version on the basis that if it is wet the car will need cleaning - Advertised in Miscellany.
