So for the past 2 weeks I've taken to driving the M3W with earbuds and music running through the iPhone...as a result, I have found the M3W to be a sublimely enjoyable car.
However, guilt at the *terribly* unsafe use of earbuds while driving, which is against the laws of the Great State of Texas, has led me to ditch the earbuds.
The loss of music and earbuds has resulted in my being subjected to the cacophony of rattles from the compensator, obviously at low speeds in traffic. Low revs and frequent clutching are obviously the time when the noise it as its worst.
Short of shelling out for the "new and improved" compensator, does anyone have an "in-home" solution to mitigating the rattling compensator?
It will cost me ~$800 to ship the car back to the dealer for fettling, so I'd rather try something on my own first...
Input appreciated!
Cheers,
GC

GC I am waiting for the new and improved compensator. looking at some pics that have been posted, the current unit looks similar to an HD unit. the lobe profile looks quite steep and the springs quite small. Also looks like the non sliding cam has been welded into place. It would be theoretically possible to reengineer your current unit with the screamin eagle upgrade. however I reckon that would cost way more than $800 Apparently there's another company called dark horse bringing out improved compensator for Harley's so maybe some other options. The SE unit appears to have a shallower cam profile more throw and stronger springs which should give a more progressive and damped feel. I have posted some pics on other threads. I am looking forward to what the factory upgrade looks like.

It seems that some are noisier than others , with mine I've found that by keeping the revs up and not allowing the engine to labour it's fine and very rarelly rattles .

I've always tried to keep the revs over 2,750 but under 7k which seems to work as the compensator is one of the few units that hasn't failed.

Have you got the type with the grease nipple, which is accessible via a hole at the bottom of the compensator?

Warbird...not sure where to check for the grease nipple...tips appreciated.
Would adding grease help the rattle? Seems it might...
Agree with others that keeping the revs up eliminates the rattle, but in slow traffic the car takes on a very "poorly manufactured" character due to the rattle...
Thanks for the pics Matty....keep us informed on the new compensator!

Does anyone know where the cross over line is on old and new compensator based on chassis number or build date?

Mine was built in February this year with the old compensator, this was replaced at the first service. It sounded like a biscuit tin with a few loose bolts in.
