I recall this being mentioned on here before, that when a new Plus 8 (??) owner filled up with a non 98 octane fuel the car was "better". On checking his manual it advised against a lower octane fuel than 98 (more widely available in Europe??). Interesting scenario! I think that the engine's management system needs re-mapping because that owner's findings [re grade of fuel] is diametrically opposed to what's in the manual. Is it worth trying Brands Hatch Morgan or Rutter's in the UK and see what info those guys have? At the end of the day, I'm hedging my bets on the fault [with the management light] being with the mapping. Mog servicing here in Perth is still in its infancy and probably won't be of much help...

Purely subjective, but it seemed to me that although the car seems to run better I found the cat fault occuring much more when I have been running the French high octane fuel.

Hi Peter.
On one hand, the manual advises using a RON98/98-octane fuel yet the cars (according to some owners) run better on a lower octane rating; but the engine management light comes on more frequently!
Doesn't that now indicate a total re-mapping?

It would seem to suggest that the factory map doesn't manage the O2 sensors like a BMW factory map would, which sounds feasible.
A custom map may help, but engine mapping is a bit of a dark art. Best to find a place who specialise in engine mapping. There will probably be good stock and improved maps for the engine as I'm sure plenty of BMW folks map their v8's.
DMS in the uk offer a remap that will work on the 4.4 and 4.8 engines. They claim mor power too, but potentially at the expense of a little torque earlier in the curve based on the anecdotes of some owners..

Could it be that the previous ore (max apologies if you owned from new!) had the car remapped? Would think this would make the check engine light a far more likely occurrence...
Maybe it's a case of reverting to the original factory map of its been tinkered with?
Just a thought...

Just a thought... I bought the car from new so I wouldn't have thought that it was tempered with except by MMC. And I haven't consulted with any BMW performance shop - well, at least not yet - which makes the mapping all-original. I think that MMC just shoves the manufacturer's original spec/mapping into the Aeros (from the 8's right through to the Coupes) and hadn't bothered fine-tuning anything! So it's left to us owners to pick up the pieces.

I think it is [a remap issue] because MMC has not checked the compatibility with the fitted [non-BMW] exhaust system. The sensors and the on-board computer will work well in an X5 or 740 because stock exhaust systems are factory-fitted to these vehicles. In Morgan's case however, the exhaust pipes are designed for the car and not BMW's own. So that may be the problem: non-compatibility, triggering off the engine warning lights. Bear in mind that the sensors and on-board computers are off-the-shelf components from BMW which also means they have been "programmed" for their vehicles. This, it seems, makes for a logical argument among Aero owners.
