Has anyone attempted upgrading the brakes, either pads, calipers, or rotors? I'm just on week one with the M3W and it's really the only thing that makes me squeamish. Well OK that and all the iPhones I see getting pulled out as I drive by.

MHO the brakes are waay better than the grip from the tyres, and there's enough 'feel' to have them on the point of locking just by looking. The car is so light and with alloy 4-pot callipers already, I'd see no point in changing anything. The get better with a bit of use, as bedding in takes time. I'm nearing 3000 miles and they are pretty good all things considered.

My initial thoughts were they are rubbish, as they were spongy and the pedal went nearly to the floor.
Once bedded in though the pedal feel was much better and after the first service the bite is now higher up. The brakes were bled at that service and I bet there was air in from the initial build.
All in all, pedal feel could be harder but they do the job.
Not had it on track yet but a few laps at speed would give you the definitive answer.

It would be interesting to know what you find wrong with the brakes exactly. Like the others, I think they feel fine, a little spongy, but they get better with use [and benefit from a bleed too], and more than the tyres could cope with.
The only thing that could harden up the pedal would be a change of master cylinder, but that would need some experimentation I fancy.

I agree with everyone elses comments , the brakes seem fine .
Infact I find care is needed in the wet , I certainly wouldn't want them to be any stronger .

I agree too. There are plenty of things one could criticize in other areas but the brakes seem just right to me.

I would add that it may be worth checking the adjustment of the drum at the back or at least getting it checked. At the first service on mine the adjustment mechanism was played with which reduced the pedal travel dramatically. (Sorry, I didn't do it myself so I can't really give any details of how to do it.)
Before adjustment it was a bit like driving an original Mini with knackered brakes - a quick pump of the pedal required to get things into place ready to brake then apply pressure.
Luckily I used to drive an original knackered Mini.
