The question was academic, for now. But I wanted to be 'prepared' for two reasons. If it happened to you, it will likely happen to me as well and I like to understand and learn those kind of things. Really thanks again for your availability and support.

It could be, or it might be the 'memory' function for the window closure system which operates independently on the driver's and passenger's side. My '09 Max seems to 'forget' the setting on one side or the other if I have not used it for a while - even if left on trickle charge.
Dean Royal has posted on here before about the re-set sequence. I found a guide from a BMW web forum which had the same info, but I have this at my other house. From memory it goes something like this.
Use window switch to put window fully open and HOLD DOWN switch for 5 secs+ (to unset) With door shut, close window which will auto-stop against seal and without releasing HOLD DOWN switch for further 5+ secs (to re-set)
Hopefully this will work (or call a friendly BMW dealer - it is their system MMC use)
Good luck Tried this procedure out several times by following your directives to the letter; but it didn't work. The window still didn't lower when I tried to open the passenger side door... What am I missing?

Sitting inside, doors closed, engine running and than perform the reset sequence. Does it for me.

Rudolf That's probably why it didn't work when I tried it: I had the ignition switch set to "ON" but had not started the engine!! I'll give it another go and see... Thnx for the tip!

As it turned out, it wasn't anything to do with re-setting the window mechanism. A sticking micro switch was the main culprit and was duly dealt with! Job done!

Happy you sorted it out. At least I see that mine was not the only one with the lazy switch :-)
Did you get the switch cleaned or replaced?

Did you get the switch cleaned or replaced? I brought it to an auto electrician and he put in a new one. They are cheap enough; but it's the inconvenience caused. Now the passenger window works as it should...
