Having an automatic would certainly help sales of the M3W in the US where a gross number of people have never driven a manual and have no interest in doing so.
As for me, Ill own a manual till I cant get one anymore. The 6 speed transmission in my MX5 is wonderful...I wouldn't have it any other way.

A manual sequential box would be interesting but then you would not be able to jump from 3rd to 5th and such if you wanted.

I wonder how an auto box would deal with the pulse delivery of the VTwin? By that I mean mechanically with the fluctuating torque, and electronically, as the box would need to ignore the pulses, but still be able to kick down when required.

Well, strictly speaking Dave, it would still be a manual box, with a hydroelectric clutch, actuated by the flappy paddles, unlike a full torque converter slush box setup. If this was the case, then the ECU could be programmed accordingly.

Manual boxes all the way for me I'm afraid - 100%. Whilst I've had autos in the past (Range Rover, RS6, Audi allroad...), I too relish using driving skills built up over 37 years of driving. Electronically synthesised Double de-Clutching is a crime, no matter how much it impresses the Playstation Generation as far as I am concerned and how could you not thrill to the feeling of a perfectly executed Heel & Toe as you approach your favourite downhill right?!
I have in fact now ethnically cleansed all auto's from the fleet and am proud of the fact - manuals need defending or they will become extinct, sunk by the wholly misleading drive by industry for posted lower carbons on the spec sheets. In fact Mrs R1NGA has the worlds best manual gearbox on her S2000 and it is a joy to stir, always.
Guess I'm Old-Skool then...?!

I've ethnically cleansed all metallic paint from my fleet in a similar burst of luddism. I wouldn't consider an auto box until I'm incapable of pressing the clutch!

People who want manual boxes must have far to much time on their hands, I can think of more important things to do with my left hand when driving than changing gear with it Give me auto any day. Right Foot Throttle, Left Foot Brake

Right Foot Throttle, Left Foot Brake Left Foot Braking - pretty much the only skill worth learning and exploiting in an auto. Also pretty useful in go-karts!

Interesting idea Chris but Dave may have a point re how the auto box could handle the engine.
