I agree with you, Graham! I, too, will be waiting for a new generation of devices. As technology goes, these devices are shrinking all the time in size and price. Remember the first pocket calculators to hit the streets? They were beyond the reach of most people and they were also quite big! But look at them now....

That was the underlying problem all along - size! Mog screens are considerably smaller than those fitted on an average family saloon, so that was a major consideration for owners.

These are closer to the mark size-wise; but at those prices (over 200 quid apiece), I would expect to have just one camera and brackets mounted in my other cars too so I can transfer the device from one to the other....

Hmm, well I tried the dual camera system (from Amazon) and can't say I was overly impressed (lens angle too wide), so it's going back today.

Or, I ignore the GPS logging facility (didn't seem to sync. on the dual camera despite it recognising GPS attached) and just go for recording video, but at a better quality.

Haven't looked at this thread for a while and wanted to see whether there are any new suggestions from our members! Yes, I'm still waiting for the new generation of dash cams (any of them available yet as I'm writing this) to check out?

The way I see it is that a 5 mpx camera is good enough for this sort of application. The most you need in resolution is "Full HD". At the price they are asking the components are going to have about the same quality as a low cost cell phone camera. That is to say the quality of the image and the colours may leave something to be desired but they are not too bad. Likewise the lenses are going to be pretty cheap too. I suspect they may be plastic but mine does seem to be glass but without a destructive test I can't be sure. Maybe, just maybe, the more expensive models will have better lenses.

Certainly the wide angle view is something to consider. People who are concerned about showing just what happened in an accident probably want the widest possible view. The dashcam that I have has 120º view angle and that is about as much as I would want for trip recording.

In the end you probably get what you pay for. If you want the best quality get a GoPro HERO3+ Auto e Motorsport Kit. Otherwise if you just want to experiment a bit like I did choose one you like the look of at a price you think fair and get it. I bought mine from China; it took weeks to arrive by ordinary post but it did arrive and it did work. The seller would have replaced it if it had turned out to be faulty but I have not had to test that.

I am happy with what I got for the price that I paid and would do it again without hesitation.

This would be an example, without GPS, that costs so little that you could experiment and then throw it away if you did not like it. Slow, slow postage is free to most countries. Faster service costs more that the camera.

Not a recommendation just the way I think and an example of what is available.

120 degree angle of view would be OK. The one I tried was wider I think. Vehicles very quickly become a small dot. The other, Muvi, that I mentioned is also pretty wide, so I'll probably give that a miss, too.
I'm really looking for something that gives close to normal vision, but a little wider... Does that make sense?

The picture quality is outstanding (though I would much prefer a dash cam with the even higher-definition H.264 encoding instead of J-MPEG...)! That video clip gives the driver's view of the road ahead and a little from the immediate side too: a 120~140 degree view is [theoretically] what your eye would see without having to move your head left or right.

Using a bit of imagination (and shutting your eyes) here, think about the [video] playback on a flat screen TV at home and that would bring a smile to your face...

There is actually a higher resolution available but it takes too long to load more than a few minutes on YouTube and uses more memory. I have it set to 1280 x 720 at the moment but it has lower and higher resolutions available. The higher resolutions are 1440 x 1080 and 1920 x 1080. I have noticed that YouTube also seems to "adjust" the resolution in some way and that videos uploaded often seem to have a lower resolution than the original.
