After many months of apathy someone has finally taken action. Am I wrong in thinking all road users are in this together? This seems to be a case of everyone for themselves

I believe my use of my car for work is also "essential" as I am not near a train or bus route.

I believe my use of the aero is essential as it stops me getting depressed after a s**t day at work trying to keep everyone employed on behalf of Mr Browns tax machine.

On this basis as its only a dry weather car can I claim my £23k second home allowance for my new house in the sun and reasonably commuting costs all without producing a receipt?

I hear the Spanish truck drivers will also strike on 8th June as well.

Seeing what our MPs are claiming as "expenses" and the rapid change of the 10 p tax rate to bribe voters in Crewe on borrowed money coupled with the lack of funding to pay the police is it any wonder no one trusts politicians

I was running close to empty on my drive home last week, so I decided to full up at my local station (a JET). On arriving at the forecourt, I nearly fell off my seat - £1.249 for diesel!



I drove back out of the station and decided I would fill up the following morning at my local Shell station (thinking it would be cheaper).

Next morning I drove up to the Shell... and... wait for it...

£1.349



...so I went back to the JET and filled up the tank... £125.00

I am seriously thinking about buying a Smart or a Prius (I know Aeroman, I should have bought yours )

PS - someone told me a month back that they had heard that unleaded would be £1.65 a litre by the end of the summer; back then I thought they were being alarmist, now I think there is a very good chance that diesel will hit that by August/Sept.

Think I'll sell the tankfull in the 745i in a week for a profit - I filled it up for 1.05 last month and it's still full! Now wheres that plastic tubing and my jerrycan...

We've all got it wrong.

Almost no duty on aviation fuel, no queues, and plenty of speed. Does anyone have a Bell Ranger I could borrow?
Or could I get the aero converted to run on aviation fuel.

Just about to change my 530d 2years old with 70k of non-essential mileage and not sure what to get next. Any ideas of how I can avoid keeping the pockets of the Government and oil companies over flowing

I think Kin has the right idea with his Toyota Prius; although, and perhaps he can answer this, my local Toyota rep said to me that he didn't feel they were well suited to people who do a lot of motorway miles?

You probably can't go too far wrong with what you already have - the BMW 5-Series diesels. If you can handle a smaller car, the BMW 120d with start-stop technology also gets 60+ mpg (real world).

Need something bigger, and want a change, the Mercedes CLS TDI gets good reviews as does the Lexus GS450h (h for Hybrid).

Those are a few ideas.

John, I had a BMW 530d before, and it did about 36mpg cruising at 85-90mph and it was the only car I ever regretted selling I sold it to a friend and bought a XC90 thinking I would be all sensible
Anyway, back on topic, if your willing to downgrade(Prius or 120d) then I would wholeheartedly recommend Prius, it will cruise all day long at 80mph(but anymore than 90, it would sound strain), fuel consumption would probably be in the low 40's, I currently getting 50.3mpg round town(but I'm a gentle driver), cheap group8 ins, £15 road tax, and £90 service, I couldn't praise it enough glad I didn't upgrade to an new X5 (although I'm still tempted)
Re 120d, only if your rear seat passengers has no legs....

As for CLS or Lexus...I can't see them being any better or cheaper to run than your current 530d. Unless of course you fancy a change...

How about a BMW 730d - wafting luxury, 35mpg overall, 40mpg motorway driving. Great value

But beware clients and staff think you've had a promotion
