I'm fixing up some small rust spots on Meg and standard "touch-up" techniques using paint supplied by Chipex isn't working well on the larger areas (approx 5mm square) so I'm thinking of trying an air brush technique. So - a few questions...

1. Anybody got any experience of this?
2. Where do you get the colour-matched paint?
3. Are the existing paint jobs on later Mogs 2-coat (base coat plus clear coat)?

Any advice gratefully received.

I've considered an air brush for a very long time, without getting on with it. Is your paint metallic because if it is, you are very unlikely to get a decent match. I had a very nasty chip on my silver Golf, and had a quote from Chips Away (from memory) - who use airbrush touching-in. The operator came to look, but said because it was in a high visibility area with no swage lines, it wouldn't blend.
Where are the chips? Is it possible to do a panel spray?
All I can tell you about the paint is that it's water based, and when treated with abrasive polish, comes off on the polishing rag.

Roger....I used an airbrush a lot some years ago ( not on a car though) and its a technique you will need to practice for a while before letting yourself loose on a car panel. I've used Chipex paint on similar sized areas and it is possible to get a decent finish if you build the surface up slightly above the paint work and then when it has hardened off fully, very carefully rub down with 1200 and 2500 grade wet and dry used wet followed by a gentle polishing compound.

Your Connaught Green should have no clear coat and as Dave says, if the colour comes off with an abrasive polish that will give you your answer. Certainly my Sport Green had no clear coat finish. Its strange that my Ink Black Roadster does have a clear coat finish....I have no idea why!

Dave, Meg is Connaught green, so not metallic. The spots I'm treating are 1 each adjacent to the front sidescreen mounting brackets and one on the trailing edge of the driver's side rear wing. I really don't want to go for full panel resprays and I'm happy, for the moment, to try and blend-in the results of airbrushing, but I'm not sure where to get the paint from.

Jay, thanks for that. The technique you describe is what I will try if I can't get hold of the right paint for an airbrush.

Jay - black cars are lacquered 'these days' to make the paint less likely to mark. That's what I read somewhere!

!!!!!!!!Solvent Paint is still very much in the Market Place, in fact if you visit any Paint Distributor in your area you will most certainly find they can assist you in either providing Hydro Base (water) or Solvent Base Paints with colour match for your vehicle.

There are now (since2006) stipulations on what type of product you can use on your vehicle, (the directive is to long to type here)but in essence if you claim it is for touch up or a classic vehicle you can still purchase Solvent paint.

As for the operation, you will note on purchase that all cans are marked "for professional use only" therefore you should request TD Sheets, for application use.

As Dave rightly suggests touching in is an art that is gained through time working with the product closely after serving a approx 4 year apprenticeship and learning the skill of Blending.

Depending if the colour is a Solid or Clear over Base will certainly be the test of your knowledge of painting, even at its best blending requires at least 50% of the area beyond the repair edge to be covered.

As for using an Air Brush what in fact you are looking for is 0.2mm needle set up which In my opinion is to small, you would be required to thin the Paint to much to allow it to pass the through the Gun, my advise is to purchase a 1.0mm or 0.8mm small gravity Gun, this will give you the flow you require but with some control and consequently allowing the correct amount of material to be applied.

It should also be noted that
TOUCH IN means the size of the eye of a needle, anything larger is a repair

Preparation is key, the finish will be easy if the prep is perfected.

Paint will not polish off if it is hardened (cured) fully, basecoat will require a Lacquer to protect it from weathering and external UV rays.

The Manufacturers use this method for 2 reasons J

1 To give a better glass sheen finish

2 Clear over base has a much higher UV protection than Solid colour finish therefore longer lasting Paint finish and almost nil dulling (fade of colour).

it is of coarse more expensive for the Manufacturer to apply the Clear over base method as more man hours are required, more curing time and more materials.
