Sorry guys, not the sort of post you expect from a lucker!
I consider this forum the most friendliest, and I am sure members here tolerated some of my previous nonsense posts(I think?)
To those who knows me will probably remember I had this so-called 5 year plan to rid of my mortgage,so I could buy another Morgan and that was 6-7years ago! Needless to say it has not happened due to kids going to uni, full house refurbishment inc very expensive bathrooms refit, other investment etc etc, things never seemed to go the way I wanted to
Finally I have my sight of my mortgage ending, my son dropped me a bombshell, this is his final year at UCL, despite his impressive CV, so far he could not find a job,or even an internship! I did ask a couple of members to help, probably not that appropriate, but I wasn't asking for favours, just asking whether they know of any vacancies which my son might have missed out applying?? Then its up to him to prove himself!
Anyway, he told me if he could not find any job, he would want to study master, either at UCL or LSE.
My first thought was thats still not a guarantee for a job!

My second thought was that could be another easy £40k min this would mean my ownership of another V8 Morgan is pretty much up in smoke!!

Of course I will try my best to help and support him.

Sorry for the long post/drivel, but I feel better now venting out my frustrations to a bunch of strangers

My boss's son had a similar conversation with my boss recently. My boss, at Christmas was asked to sit down as he had something to talk to his Dad about....thoughts of marriage, grand kids etc. Turned our to be a masters; he said yes in relief...!

Think I would have preferred my son to study further than getting married without having a steady income!

Similar situation with Son No1 here. Whilst as his dad I wished to support him, he decided that even after further (expensive) studies, he still potentially could be in the same place.

The question really is not whether you should fund him, but his potential loss of earnings from continued study over the same period.

It's ok being highly qualified, but you are still eventually going to have to convince someone that you are worth the higher earnings potential, and without any workplace experience.

My advice would be to re-assess his aspirations & perhaps shift focus. Nothing beats the reality of workplace experience for employers in the end.

Both my son and daughter faced similar dilemmas, both carried on studying and both obtained independent funding for their post-graduate studies. OK, so not a fortune, but enough for both to live on. Son is now qualified, employed and earning. Daughter is being funded for her PhD.

HP seem to employing a number of newly qualified Graduates.
They seem to be looking at them as 'cheap' labour while disposing of older, experienced (and thereby more expensive) employees...

Both of my daughters finish their undergraduate studies this summer, so I understand where you're coming from.

Daughter N°1 has been accepted to do a Master's in simultaneous interpreting techniques at Westminster with a promise of a fees scholarship if she get's a first in her B.A. (which she should achieve). It still leaves muggins with the cost of supporting her to live in London for a year. I'm happy to do this as she has good reason for wanting the qualification, it opens the door to the jobs she is interested in doing.

Daughter N°2 is currently applying for jobs and is hoping to get a place on a graduate trainee scheme in the City. Failing this she would plan to do a ski season in the alps followed by working as a deckhand on a yacht in the summer while continuing the job hunt. Fingers crossed.

My son is currently studying economic hoping to work in the financial sectors, apparently he has applied to around 100 companies, even offering working for free for some, just to get the experience!

With the current economic climate, is there any wonder he's struggling

As for the masters, he said it would be last resort only.

One bit of good news though, I've managed to stopped smoking for over 12months now. And getting fatter!
Hopefully I'll get to live to the ripe old age of 70 before I could consider another Morgan.

Sospan Jr went to do a Masters.
He was working and had a year sabbatical.
Whilst doing the Masters a mate got him part time work with a company in the field he was studying.
This brought in some £££.
It led to him being offered a job by this company when he got the masters.
I don't know if your son could do the same - time and avilability permitting - but even limited hours for no wage?
This gets some experience he can add to his CV and may lead to a job.
Worth a try....
