Just a quick post that might help people in the future.

I was working on the 3W at the weekend; fitting a thermocouple with stainless braided cover for cylinder head temperature measurements and things got rather hot!

The thermocouple braid (other end earthed to cylinder head) had brushed the post circled in the photo which is permanent live direct to the battery and not insulated! There was a short and the braid got very hot very quickly. Gave me quite a fright.

It now sports an old rubber bung and some insulation tape so i don't inadvertently short the battery with something more effective and cause a fire. frown.

Quite right, this connector should have an insulated cover fitted.

An old fashioned 90 degree rubber spark plug cap/ distributor lead cap can be made to fit that terminal.

Maybe the plastic cover from a new battery? They must have loads at an appropriate outlet?

Local hardware store should have a range of size of rubber caps that fit onto the bottom of chair legs and the like
