Just read this Oz M3W February 2014 update outlining the current status of compliance for our market. There are also some good photos of the final Oz designed car.....

Absolutely ridiculous the 3 wheeler will be treated as a "luxury car" and will attract the 33% luxury car tax (LCT) on each dollar over A$60,316 (or A$75,375 for fuel efficient vehicles - which the 3 Wheeler is not). With all three car manufacturers in Australia closing local factories by 2017 there has been much debate about whether all import tariffs should be abolished as there will no longer be a local car industry to protect, some also argue (quite rightly IMHO) the luxury car tax should go too. A government productivity commission report into the Australian car industry is suggesting LCT be abolished as it unfairly penalises people who choose to indulge themselves by purchasing cars, as no similar tax applies to jewellery, boats or other luxury goods.....if it goes you can bet a broader based tax will replace it as the Government won't like losing the revenue....

Sorry, drifted off the M3W topic a bit .....the above aside, it's great news the process of homologation is almost compete. A credit to the Australian importer and MMC in the UK for persisting with the process when many others might have given up because it's all too hard. Also shows a great deal of commitment to our comparatively small market compared to the UK, Europe and USA - which as a 4/4 owner and (hopefully) future M3W owner this is all positive news

It is certainly good news for those who are waiting for the Oz3W.

It is going to make the M3W a very expensive toy in Australia and as such it is hard to see that the sales achieved will justify to expense of Australian homologation. I am surprised, given that they have insisted on homologation as a car, that they have relaxed the rules on pedestrian safety. The front end is not exactly pedestrian friendly.

Some of the Australian Design Rule requirements may be good to adopt on mainstream production, at least as an option. The more substantial roll bars, the head rests (anti whiplash), and the high level brake light all look good. Though with the high level brake light fitted it would look better if the fuel cap was moved to behind the nearside headrest/roll bar.

Morgan would also do very well to widely publish the crash test reports and photos. The fact that it has passed fairly stringent crash tests would be good publicity and assure some people who are worried about how safe the M3W is in a crash.

Mmmm think the headrests spoil the look of the car IMHO that is!!

Only in Australia would the M3W be classed as a luxury car....

And the mirrors are horrible too.

The rabbit ears headrests are available in the UK if wished. I turned the offer down, on the basis whilst my head can make a mess on the road, no-one will laugh. Unlike those headrests..

Isn't there free trade between Oz and New Zealand? I wonder if the back door route for a M3W at a reasonable price would be through NZ, where they have been imported almost since production started. Register it there and then ship over as a 2nd hand vehicle?

Wrapped exhaust pipes- is that to prevent pedestrians from getting barbequed? Gerry.

I wonder if the 2014 "Stiffened chassis" is as a result of the Australian requirements?

The taller anti roll bars I suppose make sense and the padded inserts will, at least, keep wind away from the back of the drivers/riders neck!

As to classification as a "Luxury" car, obvious really. A luxury is something that isn't needed, looks fantastic and can be replaced, functionally, buy something cheap.
