I looked to fit these units to my Defender, the advice from the Landrover forum was quote "they aren't road legal unless your vehicle was first used before 1st April 1986. Yes they may pass an MoT, but that won't stop some sharp copper having you for it. most likely you'll have no problem, but get involved in an incident and it's the sort of thing they are likely to notice and add on as a bonus charge in case nothing else sticks". I don't know how sound the advice is but I decided against them. If you are worried about your Mogs lumens "E"- marked crystal units with Nightbreakers might be a safer option.

That's the best smile I've had all night! You're hard pressed to see a real TrafPol these days, let along get pulled by one. I have never ever heard of anyone getting ticketed for not having e numbers of vehicle equipment, it's simply not proveable beyond reasonable doubt, that that vehicle, at that time on that road, should have one. Yes, a manufacturer has to fit E marked units but anything the owner fits has to be "fit for purpose": my understanding is that if the car passes a MOT with these lights fitted then they are "fit for purpose".
The only 2 areas where insurance companies are likely to pay attention are cats and after market HIDs. Removing your cat and fitting a bypass is a big "no-no", as does fitting HIDs without self levelling and washers. Both will invalidate your MOT and hence your insurance.
While I'm not going to defend illegal lights, a invalid MOT does not invalidate insurance. The owner has an obligation to keep the car safe and in proper order and an once yearly test - that is only valid when the car is tested means surprisingly little. If, and it'll never happen, a policeman objects to my LED brake lights, I can remove one wire and be fully legal with no brake lights at all! Anything newer than 1934 though can't play that game.

For extra light, I'm highly tempted to fit these Cibie dipping lights: Light Unit Oscar Main/Dip RHD  I think it's legal to have two sets of dipping lights, so long as they are fitted in pairs...

Interesting point about E marking. I've just checked MrsW's Polo, and none of the lights have visible E marks. None have been replaced so far as I'm aware. So it appears that an external mark may not be required, in which case a roadside check would have to be more intensive to determine whether or not the unit was e marked.
Then I looked at the Morgans. The Roadster indicators are E11 01 1041. But Bumble has E11 6180, so these identical lenses must have been re-certified.
At the rear I fitted red lenses from the Aero, and they are marked E11 7218, except that one has no E mark, but is otherwise identical. The headlamps are E11 0034.
