Funny things watches.

You can buy a watch for £10 from Argos that looks okay and does the job just as good as a £10,000 time piece.

With a car you can see where the money goes. if it costs £10k or £100k - you can see the difference.

On a watch that retails for £10k, I wouldn't have a clue if it cost £500 or £9500 to make.

I suspect however that the margins are high.

Thats exactly why there seem to be some many "new" watch specialist companies springing up these days. I have a friend that has been privately buying and selling watches for many years and he giggles when he sees most of these new brands.

They are welcome as good quality fashion watches and often are a very nice design but you highlight exactly what they are, a mechanism in a case they also get made externally in many cases.

Then again a Morgan might be considered that as well, BMW engine in a frame with hand finishing. whoops !

I am also reminded of CM's comment re the wood. Purdey charging the same for a gun/pair of guns as he charged for all of the car.

Its not what it costs but whats its worth to the buyer.

I wondered if this was of any use to someone on the forum:

Ernest Jones are selling off some of their Hamilton stock and they have the retro pilots watch marked down from £585 to £350 in the sale:

Simon,
Thanks for the link, it seems like the Hamilton watches which I liked are out of stock.

I like watches but am far from an expert on them. I have £700 from the company I work for and have to spend it on a gift for myself. I'm torn between a watch and a Mont Blanc Meisterstuck pen (I like nice fountain pens too). Any recomendations from the watch fraternity on a good every day watch for around £700?
I have seen Tag watches at what seem to be good prices from an American company called Authentic watches, anyne dealt with them?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Wow thats a difficult question. It is such a matter of personal taste that suggestions would be difficult.

Assuming you want a new watch you are just shy of the big league names, not always a bad thing. Given that they are fashion as much as function buy on what you find attractive would be my advice. There have been some very nice alternatives on the board before.

There are some very nice TAG Monaco on ebay around the £1000 mark. One of my personal favourites. Breitlings also start to come in around that mark as well.

http://www.austinkaye.co.uk/ are a well known trader in pre-owned watches so you should be confident with the watches they handle as an example.

http://secondtimeround.com/ have also been in the business for a long time and generally have a good reputation.

http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Watches/Bet...;fl_sex_ss=Mens This is also a good web site.

Some of the less well known but long standing names I have seen before
http://www.pageandcooper.com/watches-3/sinn-watches/
http://www.damasko.de/en/

Germany has a number of handmade watch makers that are not well known outside Germany and offer very good value and quality. Many can be found here.
http://www.watchmann.com/ I rather like the Vollmer and Junghans

That should give you some mouse poking practice !
As always do share the photos when you have made up your mind, we all like to live vicariously here !

Love this racing inspired Chopard Superfast Power Control - it would be nice at £1500 but those fiendish Swiss require me to add another 0 at the end.

Clipper,
It very much depends on whether you want new or pre enjoyed. On the new front, can I suggest you look at Oris or Clive Ward.
