Hello gents...

So I have noticed a worsening rattle at low RPM (2000-2500) that seems to emanate from behind the rear passenger seat (LHD car). It occurs in both forward and reverse gears

The rattle disappears when the clutch is depressed, so I suspect something in the drive train...

It's also gone when I'm over 3000 RPM...

It almost seems as if something in the drive train is loose (bevel box mount?) and a harmonic is set up at low RPM's

I'm attaching a link below to a video in which you can clearly hear what I'm talking about.

[video:google]https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9cgseXkIVq4ODhGYm9FQjBQVzZHeXUtbkN0RmJqVFE5RnNv/edit?usp=sharing[/video]

I'm planning to pull the seat back and the center console to try to localize the rattle this weekend, but any suggestions are appreciated!

Trying to fettle this myself and spare the cost of shipping the car to Arizona...

Before I pull the seats, I may remove the boot floor and have my wife drive me around the block, while I sit in the passengers seat and stick my head in the open boot and listen...the neighbors already think I'm nuts, this will confirm it...

This strongly resembles the compensator or the drive shaft flywheel.
Generally noise resonates throughout the metal transmission.

Agreed - this sounds like typical Compensator failure - or at least starting to fail - its a horrible noise :(((( frown2

sorry to hear about the noise. it's also helpful to pull the transmission tunnel cover and driveshaft cover. by doing this you can drive around with it fully exposed and see if you can heard the sounds more directly as others have mentioned these sounds have a sneaky way of sounding like the are coming from one area but in fact another area far away.

Have to agree with M3BOY, my compensator started off like that and then got much worse.
