I have bought a set of these clips and am ready to start this job.
However on checking the clearance inside the body where the holes will appear, i.e. inside the cockpit , I can see a section of the wood body frame running along under this section presumably as support blocking access to this area.
Question for anyone who has already fitted these - did you screw down into this wood or find a way to get nuts onto the bolts holding the clips ?
I know space is tight down there but a picture from about where your knees are in normal driving position towards the fitting from the inside would be most appreciated ( or a drawing ! )
Make sure you mount the base of the forward clips
outside the ash frame, otherwise the rubber pads will not press upon the cowl, which is essential.
I cannot comment on the rearward section, except to say that it is evident that drilling into the wood will be necessary. I kept the rearward Dzus fasteners, because they work correctly.
If you check back through this thread to 10/01/14 06:36 AM, you will find a blurry photo of mine that Raphael kindly posted for me (I had problems uploading photos at that time - and do not have time at the moment to post that photo again), which will give a rough idea of where to drill.
This is really a two-man job unless you are a smallish acrobat. I have long, simian arms but did my back a mischief trying to do the job solo.
Also, I repeat this important advice:
At the risk of stating the obvious to those with greater skills than I have in these matters (ie quite a lot of people on here), the technique when drilling into fragile materials such as tiles, glass or, as in this case, painted metal, is as follows:
1) Cover the target area with masking tape.
2) Carefully mark the drilling point with a pencil.
3) Start with a smaller drill bit than the hole you will finally make.
4) Set the drill to its lowest speed (and check that the hammer option is off!).
5) Proceed carefully.
6) Enlarge hole to final size.
7) Remove masking tape.
8) Finish job.
9) Have a glass of Aberlour.
