Does anyone know why the turn signal switch is on the left for RHD vehicles but on the right for LHD vehicles?

Does anyone know why the turn signal switch is on the left for RHD vehicles but on the right for LHD vehicles? I wouldn't bet a pay check on this, but the turn signal lever is about as long as the out edge of the steering wheel. If it were on the left side for a LHD M3W, it would probably hit the cowl as it sweeps down the left side from the dash. Not enough room to use it safely I would guess.

I have a vague memory it was done in the 70's or 80's to standardise control layout. Prior to that each manufacturer made up their own mind.
I think indicator on the right for LHD was favored by the USA and Europe, visa versa for Japan and so UK ended up with left hand indicators.
Someone with a better memory than mine might be able to shed more light...

All turn signal levers in cars in the US are on the left.
Can't see why someone here would think the right side of the wheel is better.
I just don't see the room on the left side for it from the pictures I've seen.

Chris I think you are correct. So far as I'm aware Hyundai/Kia were last to fall into line.
