I am going to fit some new tyres before we zoom off to Portugal for ever and a day..... however I cannot make me mind up as to whats best!!

My needs are:
1. Good dry weather performance in terms of grip and progressiveness.
2. Suitable for track day or road
3. Suitable for some extended European touring
4. not too bothered about wet grip in a dry climate but will occasionally get caught in a good downpour.

Choice is between 'road legal track day / competition tyres' or 'high performance road tyres' from the following lists.. the first four are current hot favourites.

- Toyo R888
- Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
- Yokohama Advan A048
- Kumho V70a

- Avon ZZR
- Toto Proxes T1
- Pirelli PZero Corsa System
- Bridgestone Potenza RE001
- Dunlop Direzza DZ02
- Pirelli PZero Nero
- Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
- Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Any experience welcome

Phil,

Viper swears by the Toyo 888s he has on his S1 - he says the grip is immense. I am sure he will throw his opinion into the pot when he next logs on but I understand that they are quite soft and therefore wear quicker than other tyres.

At Goodwood and Gurston, I had Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric fitted and found them to be excellent - very progressive and grippy; however, I did find (at Goodwood) that they became unsettled if the pressure wasn't correct. This isn't a real criticism as much as something to be aware of.

I have Pilot Cups before but never tracked them - so can't comment on how they perform; however, for road use they were excellent albeit not as progressive as the Eagle F1s.

You may find that the Tyre regs in Portugal prohibit/restrict your selection away from the track day tyres.

Personally I would go for one of the following:

- Avon ZZR
- Toto Proxes T1
- Pirelli PZero Nero
- Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
- Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric

Phil- I am looking at the Toyo 888 new SG (soft) compound as a 1B tyre. I think they would be good on an Aero.

According to my other forum, if you wanted a good all rounder Toyo Proxis, good value as well.

If you wanted a track biased tyre Toyo R888, but I'd go for hard compound all round to get reasonable mileage use out of a set, and would still gives excellent dry road grip.
I've had Yoko A048 on my last car(soft front, medium rear) awesome grip in dry, but very scary in wet, others swapped to Toyo R888 and noticed better wet road grip as well

Thanks for the feedback .... it looks to be boiling down to a choice between Toyos... T1R or R888....

.....Viper.... waiting

If you haven't had them before, I'd gravitate toward one of the others as you may find you don't like them.

I've got the T1Rs on my car at the moment- they are phenomenally good for the price in the wet and dry- but I am still tempted by the 888s- and would be even more tempted in a dry country driving a car with twice my cars power!

I have read that comment on Pistoheads too.

I have had them on a Volvo V70 estate a couple of years back and found the wet grip excellent.

Many trad owners swear by them and they are used a lot for sprints/hillclimbs on trads. Interestingly given the rather 'historical' nature of the trad suspension design I know that higher profile tyres generally suite them better due to the side wall flex you get. Maybe that's why they Toyo is good too.

Oh confusion ... confusion... confusion....

Phil- my T1rs are 185/55/15- but I noticed that the new t1r has moved to 185/45/15. Presumably they have reduced the height of the sidewall to reduce flex.
