Going to give the plus 4 a service over easter. One of the things I might need is rear brake shoes. Having a quick squint at the drums today looks like they are retained by four small bolts and three or four large slotted studs/screws. What do i need to remove (just the bolts or the lot)to get the brake drum off to see the shoes? Take it replacing shoes is quite straight forward?

Just the four bolts - do not remove the slotted screws - this holds the assembly to the hub. Remember to back off the brake shoes (square nut on the back of the drums).

Thanks for that Richard, i have also heard that the auto adjusters can be a problem but time will tell!

Hi Pete

Have a look here for a 2009 sport

http://www.talkmorgan.com/ubbthreads.php/topics/118358/Re_4_4_Sport_Changing_Rear_Bra#Post118358

Hope it helps, once we went down that route it was an ok job. Just take pictures before you dismantle then lay all the old shoes and springs out as you take more pictures off them for reference after a couple of days!!

Kind regards
Cain

one trick that makes replacing the shoes very easy is this: Take a couple of lengths of lockwire about 9" long and fold them in half. Wrap an inch or so of the free ends around the shaft of a screwdriver so that you have effectively a T handle with a loop of wire hanging off it.

Feed the loop through the hole in the brake shoe and around the end of the hook on the return spring.

Then you have pull on the t handle to held pull the end of the spring in the right position int the brake shoe.

Obviously rear brakes haven't got any easier as time passed. Taking digital pics is so easy these days but oh so easy to forget until one comes to reassemble the "obvious".
For what its worth, rear brakes are generally dirty and a bit greasy to work on, so in my view it is well worth the time spent dismantling and cleaning. Particularly with regard to adjusters (auto/fixed), bleed nipples and sliding clips ('79) which have a nasty habit of seizing up when you don't want them to. A smear of graphite or copaslip on abutting surfaces is well worth the effort...........and keep an aerosol can of Brake/Clutch Cleaner handy, this is an excellent solvent for cleaning off a greasy thumb print and won't harm the linings.

A nightmare to work on the rear brakes of the later cars! The hub flange gets in the way and it is very difficult to get to the shoe springs. Even my dealer Mike Duncan had to resort to pulling the hubs!

Not a nice job at all....

Don't over estimate the wear these brakes get, I got new ones and then took off the drums and they were fine...did find a leaking cylinder thought so well worth it.

Top Tip - to get the drums off I was told after banging away like a mad thing from behind (and hitting the back plate more often than not!) that actually bang them 'ON' they seem to 'react' better and then release!!

I have a set of EBC Greenstuff Shoes if anyone interested.
