I was surprised to find yesterday that the fuel pump on my 2008 plus 4 has 2 connections. one white (connected to the output side of the fuel filter) and one red (connected to a tee piece and then to the input side of the filter and a pipe running towards the front of the car). Thinking about this the white one looks like the fuel output and the red one some kind of built in pressure relief valve. If this is true then my fuel filter is connected backwards on the other hand if the red one is the output then the fuel filter must be connected in a bypass mode which doesn't seem right.

Does anyone know what the ports on the pump are?

It's not clear on the parts diagram Dave but there's also a separate filter. It looks like the single pipe comes from pump to filter, then the filter outlet goes to a T piece. One leg goes back to the pump and the other goes forward to the engine.
Does that sound familiar?

Thanks Dave yes that's it. Sounds from your description as though the filter is definitely back to front. The filter is new so perhaps I should turn it round. Mind you I know the old one was the same way round.

The parts diagram show arrows on the filter casing which presumably indicate flow direction. Can you see any?

That's how I assessed which side is input and which output. Looking around the Ford Forums I couldn't find any indication of a structural problem with the filter being the wrong way round. It seems that the flow is more restricted and so it cloggs more easily. As it's done more than 40 miles the wrong way round and the tank was almost empty, rather than releasing that tiny bit of crud that is bound to be in there and makes all the difference into the injectors, I think I will leave it as it is for now and invest another 10 quid in a new one I can put in the right way round at some time.

I have a problem with my 2007 Roadster fuel pump and may have the same pump / filter as you . On my car the pump discharges through the white nozzle to the inlet of a standard Ford/Kayser AK11-CD fuel filter. The outlet of the fuel filter goes to a tee. One branch of the tee returns the fuel to the red nozzle on the pump and the other branch of the tee goes forward to the engine. There is also a return line from the engine that goes to the carbon cannistor and then to the tank via a small part which i still have to identify what it actually does !

That is exactly what I have. I don't know what that is either. When I looked at mine to start with the carbon cannister was loose as the single self tapping screw that holds it in place had pulled out. That, at least, was an easy fix.

Just as a matter of interest I did suspect that my fuel filter was clogged. After replacing it I took the old one in the shed and angle ground it in half.It was clean as a whistle inside and it did not appear to make any difference what direction the flow was although there is a flow direction arrow on the fuel pump casing.
I just wish somebody knew how to remove these fuel pumps.

There really was no doubt my fuel filter was clogged in some way. Changing it definately cleared a severe misfire. I hadn't thought to open it up though.

I have just had my new in tank electric fuel pump replaced and the car is now running well.
Looking at the old pump the live terminal had overheated and showed signs of burn out.
At the bottom of the pump there is a fine gauze strainer 60mm diameter. This strainer should prevent particles from passing through the pump. The filter therefore is only there for the " final clean"
