Some of the info that has been posted is not quite right, sorry Dan but the two chassis pictures are just that; two separate chassis, not one before and after welding in of the cross bracing.
I am aware of three variations of bracing at the front ends of the chassis;
2012 bolt in cross brace only
2013 stiffener plates welded in plus bolt in cross brace
2014 welded in cross bracing only
I'm not going to state any specific dates but I can say that in November 2012 my car went into build, in November 2013 it got rebuilt with a new chassis (which incidentally also required a new pedal box I believe to make it fit.) In January 2014 the 2014 chassis cars were definitely being built.
There are other changes in the various chassis only a very few of which I am remotely aware of.

Calum, you are correct about the before and after picture. Clearly two different builds. But it is a early frame without a weld in or bolt in brace and a late frame with the welded in brace.

In your first picture you can see rust on the bottom area and then clean steel around the top. So in your case it was probably cracked for some time before it failed and separated completely.

All I can say is that there is plenty of force on the upper wishbone horizontal frame tubes.

Dan,
The photo without any bracing looks to be a very early car, maybe even pre-production - it also looks to have the original Suplex shocks and the headlamp brackets are welded on.
My one had sat effectively untouched for about a month before the crack was found so while you are probably right that it had been cracked for some time the rust marks could be misleading. Don't fancy persuading (or paying!) someone to model the stresses and the propagation rates. smile

Just a thought, having looked at some pictures of the Empire kit it looks to me like the steady bar, which connects the upper wishbone extension to the bottom chassis outrigger triangulates the whole front end. This should make everything much more rigid.

Another justification for ordering the Empire Kit?

Perhaps those who have it fitted could comment on their findings.

My car is going to the factory on tuesday , they are presuming a new chassis will be required , I don't yet have any idea how long this is likely to take , but I can't imagine it'll be a quick job !

Good news, are you having the upgrades all done while it's there?

My one was stated as two weeks at the factory and turned out to be three weeks for the dealer-factory-dealer round trip. Given the work they did I don't see it as happening noticeably quicker than that.

Are there any preventive measures users could take on 2012/2103 chassis to avoid stress cracks, i.e welding additionnal supports or other.
Would be interesting to know how many earlier chassis have cracked and pushed Morgan for an improved 2104 design.

Mine has the 2013 welded stiffening plates & bolted cross brace. I found that one bolt of the brace had worked loose. So far all seems well.

Tim.
