I emailed Quaife last year asking which oil to use. They advised me to contact the factory. It would be interesting to know which oil Quaife would recommend, being the manufacturer?

You have to love it...... smile. All the owners manual says is a fully synthetic 90weight.

And nothing came out! I added oil unil it came out the hole above the drain plug and tried the process again. This time, I got about half a cup of black glop with the viscosity of chocolate pudding.
Long story short, after about 10 changes, I still get black fluid out of the bevel drive ( at least now, it flows readily). I gave up on the gear climbing lube and am now running Mobil 1 full synthetic 85/140. The drain plug has a magnet in it and for all the noise, I am yet to find any metallic residue.
Does anyone know hat the factory puts in bevel box as delivered?

It is not unusual for bikes and vehicles to be shipped without oil. Normally there are big labels everywhere to advise that oil should be added before starting.

It seems to me that dealers should be checking the oil level prior to delivery as part of the PDI.

Given that there have been some other reports on this forum that the oil level in the bevel box seems to be low perhaps it is worthwhile having it checked if there is any doubt at all.

In closing Moto Guzzi used to recommend the addition of molybdenum disulphide to the oil of the bevel drive. We used to use Motul Gearbox 80W90 with great success and it certainly had the effect of quietening noisy transmissions.

Oil advertised on Quaife website.

Titan Race SYN 5 Synthetic Gear And Transmission Oil.

Maybe a good one to use, seeing as Quaife market it.

My owners manual says:
Bevel Box 80-140 Fully Synthetic. Fill to level plug

I bought this stuff from Morris Lubricants:
Lodexol XFS 80W/140 Fully Synthetic Limited Slip Gear Oil

http://www.morrislubricants.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=68

Am I wrong?

I think the confusion is that:
The original M3W Owners Handbook said:
“EP90 Mineral or 75-90 Fully synthetic”
The latest M3W Owners Handbook says:
“80-140 Fully synthetic. Fill to level plug.”
Yes 80W-140 Fully synthetic is the correct Bevel Box oil to be using.
Hope this helps eliminate confusion on this topic.

Wasn't me! Sorry to hear what happened. Seems like every time I log on to TM there's more bad news at the moment frown

The bevel box holds ≈ 1/2 quart. It really helps if you get the bevel box fully warmed prior to changing the fluid. I run my M3W for about 20 minutes with cruising speeds about 75MPH. If it is fully warm will help the grey grease flow out of the drain hole. Once the grease stops flowing out, replace the drain plug and refill with a high quality synthetic lube. Please note it took about 3-4 drain cycles to get all of the grease out.

Sorry, above should read "approximately 1/2 quart".
