So that's a bit less than 1/2 litre. If I buy 2 litres of oil that should be enough.

Tim, what are you willing to risk with experimenting with the volume type of lubricant? Any thoughts on the potential ramifications if you get it wrong?
Having the drivetrain freeze and coming to an instant stop is a possibility.
Why isn't the factory addressing this?

1/2 US quart = 473.176473 milliliters 1/2 imperial quart = 568.26125 millilitres Take your pick

Tim, beware there are three holes in the BB, drain on the bottom, and Allen plug part way up and a vent plug on the right side. I mistakenly filled mine through the vent plug and put "too much" oil in it.

Yes I have got that, fill to middle port with allen plug not the top port with orange plug

Any update on the cause of your failure?
Was it I fact the BB or rear brake lockup or trans/ driveshaft?

It was the bevel box that failed. The car is at the dealer and the box has not yet been opened. They disconnected the drive shaft and drive belt. The bevel box is completely seized up and unable to turn.When removing the oil plug the liquid is full of ground up pieces of metal.
I don't know the total extent of the damage beyond the BB and afloat spot on the back tire. I do have concerns though. When it locked up the clutch would not disengage the transmission. Did it do damage there also? What about the engine going from running at highway RPM to immediate stop? Did that do damage?
I'm still waiting to see the proposed resolution from the dealer. Although this is fun vehicle to drive, my confidence in the safety of operating M3W is shaken. Only the perfect set of circumstances prohibited this from being catastrophic.

Intreresting that you say the clutch would not disengage the transmission. If the the BB is locked solid, which then stops the engine dead, pushing down on the clutch will not do anything will it? Did you try starting the engine again after the incident? If so was the clutch in or out?
