I discussed the upcoming repair with the dealer. BTW they seem to be going out of their way to help supply an explanation of what happened. No response from Morgan yet but the dealer is trying to get answers..

The fact that my BB was not all that noisy and never gave any advance warning before total failure is what is perplexing. The dealer inspected the speedometer to determine mileage and it was at just under 1100 miles when the failure took place.

Does anyone know who manufactures the bevel box? Has there been any refinement since they started supplying them for the M3W? I'm sure not excited about putting the same thing in again and HOPING it's all OK.

I am being asked if I'd like to consider a modification offered by Morgan that changes the BB to insulated mounts. It about $1000 US.

RE: oil. We took the fill plug out and it was full of oil although also full of ground up pieces of metal. The box has not been opened because the dealer is expecting Morgan to ask for it back for analysis at the factory. Alas no factory response yet.

Also, thank you, everyone for your comments. Not being a gear head I learn much from your analysis and appreciate your concern on how this could have ended up.

As far as I know, Quaife make the bevel boxes for the five speeder. Firm has a good reputation for gearboxes and would have been the obvious firm to go to. No idea as to any mods although the problems suggest more a quality control issue than a defective design.

You are quite correct Martyn, Quaife manufacture the bevel box for Morgan.

My dealer tells me that the factory recommended that the Bevel Box oil be changed at each service. My BB oil was changed at 1st service last year and it did seem a bit quieter. Didn't prevent the factory from replacing it though when my car was recalled due to other faults!

The NVH upgrade will be the best way to get a quiet BB, like MY2014 cars

If I was supplying the bevel boxes, they'd be shipped with a small amount of grease on the gears, with instructions to add the oil once installed in the car. I would not want to supply them with oil as in transit, the poor things might have the breather at the lowest point and consequently both make a mess and need refilling.

I sort of feel qualified to say that as I rebuilt my vintage bevel box with new shafts and bearings. I then set it up and so far, other than having chosen the wrong bearing for the input (wrong type of seal - works fine but leaks) no proper problems.

I cannot agree that the NVH makes any difference at all.

+1 on that , I can now cruise at 30 in 4th gear no problem without severe unhappiness going on between the gearbox and bevel box. Impossible before.

NVH and new bevel box fitted to mine and still very noisy at 50mph.

Mine without NVH And about 8000 miles is more And more quiet.
