I need to pick up a live 12v supply under the bonnet when the ignition is on. I have looked very carefully and there seems no suitable cable that I can piggyback. The maximum current I am likely to draw is about 500mA. The fusebox is an absolute nightmare and is so packed with cables that its impossible to see what cable goes to which fuse.

The Roadster is a 2009, series 2.

Any ideas would be appreciated. cheers

Neil

You would have to run a wire through the grommet in the firewall but the best is probably to pick up the power from the cable that is provided for the map light.

It is on the same circuit as the cigarette lighter and should be close to the cigarette lighter. If you already have the map light double on to that or onto the back of the cigarette lighter.

I had already considered that, but the cigarette lighter is permanently live and therefore would not be suitable. Thanks for the idea.

Or maybe the dash dimmer just under the dashboard.

Can you not pick up a live feed to one of the instruments, they should only get a live feed when the ignition is on. Try the petrol gauge.

I would not touch the gauges, its not uncommon for them to be temperamental and given the electronic control module for the dash and lights who knows if anything extra in the circuit might cause issues?

There may be a spare pin location that becomes live in the ignition switch multi connector or you could tap into the wiper feed. As mentioned above the radio is another but remember most modern radios have 2 input feeds, I permanent live and one ignition switched so a few moments with a test lamp should show which is which.

I'm fitting a small fused distribution box under my dash ( Centech AP-1 from Nippy Norman). The live feed into it will be from the main power intake up in the top right of the front bulkhead under the dash controlled by a relay which I'm planning to connect to the live input to the lighting switch. The box then gives me several switched outputs.

Back of the ignition switch is an option. Or at the multi pin connector from it. Or as John said - the radio supply.
