Hello, I'm thinking of taking my first plunge into Morgan ownership. I spend most of the year in France so I really need a left hooker. I spotted an RAF blue +4 SS for sale in the Italian Morgan dealer in Milan and went for a test drive last Monday. I really liked the car and the dealer principal is a charming man. I'm pretty technically minded and understand what's under the bonnet but I'm unsure of the origin of the variable valve timing modification. Could anybody enlighten me and any comments on this engine's reliability would be appreciated.

Hi John,
The variable valve timing is only on the inlet valves and is standard on the Mazda MZR unit fitted to the SS.However the exhaust cam has been developed by OMEX ltd who set up the ecu and exhaust.
I have been watching with interest how the works racer went on,I am glad to say the engine has been totally reliable and the only race the car didn't finish was because the fuel pump came loose and disconnected itself.
So to sum up I would call the engine bulletproof!what I have done with mine is fit the suplex suspension kit which means you can use the power you have on any road surface you like.

Thanks for that. David. Great insight. I think I've come to the end of my (erroneous) price justification period and I'll buy her next week. I have been looking at a front suspension kit that seems to alleviate some of the bump and thump of the standard set up. I'd be very interested to know more about your suplex set up.

Borghi is a great guy and really very helpful and professional. I can thoroughly recommend him.

He fitted the Suplex kit to my car and if you are in the area you are quite welcome to take mine for a drive. I have heard that Borghi himself is not convinced as to the benefits of the Suplex but he did not have the chance to drive it out of the city. Personally I am very sure of its benefits. The car rides the bumps better, is much flatter in cornering, and the steering is lighter.

I am sure you will enjoy the Plus 4 SS enormously. When I ordered my car I really wanted the SS but the factory would not do a bespoke version.

I love my P4SS .I have spoken to Williams re the Suplex kit and they tell me the set up on the SS is very good and Suplex would not be required.
I find it so much better than my standard Plus 4 that I have decided to leave it alone as advised.
The down side of the P4SS is that it sounds so good when thrashed you can't help giving it a boot full at every opportunity.Hence my first Mog speeding ticket!!

The Suplex mod will always be a matter of personal taste; however, knowing David G as I do, I'd suggest he wouldn't recommend it if it really didn't improve the standard set up. It is fair to say that 'he knows a thing or two about a thing or two'

Thank you Simon I only make posts on subjects that I have personal experience of.A great deal of time and knowledge went into the design of the Suplex kit and it certainly enhances the ride in all respects.
